MC146
WHO?
These sessions are for postgraduate students from all faculties, especially those currently doing original research. Emphasis is on international students, who are more likely to need to develop their grammatical skills, but local students are completely welcome.
WHAT?
The focus will be on the rules of grammar as a means of expression, to (1) make sentences technically correct and (2) promote clear, fluent and effective communication. These habits develop through practice, so it is expected that you be involved every week during the course.
HOW?
Each week, a piece of one student’s academic writing will be distributed to the group. Everyone in the group will then work together to identify, discuss and understand grammatical issues in that piece of work – and how these can be used in your own writing.
The teacher will act partly as a facilitator but also as a native-speaker authority
(which many students say they find useful). The teacher will organise and prioritise the grammatical issues in each student’s work so that the discussions progress logically, helping students see the relationships between the various grammatical mistakes/constructions.
These sessions are about YOUR work, and will be based on YOUR writing, so be ready to discuss examples of your work with others.
