AADMD Student Chapter Updates Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health AND School of Osteopathic Medicine o Selected new 2013-14 officers o First meeting in July (commencement of classes) Initiate planning for annual Day for Special Smiles event Discuss how to increase member participation (meetings) Harvard School of Dental Medicine – Sydnee Chavis* - Attendance at Special Olympics – Vermont - Meeting with new board members – June 11, 2013 - Dinner this Fall with ID/DD community (use Special Olympics Grant) o Funding – SO standard grant $300/year Request: intent for use, receipts, contact info Potential interactive meeting with MD and patient in future University of Louisville School of Dentistry – Dr. Linel Holwager & Shane Vaughn (NO NEW UPDATES) - Working on paperwork to get recognized by university - Membership drive in the future after gets approved by campus - On June 1st we will participate in Special Smiles in Richmond, KY. o 15 students participated. o During the event we will hold our first official AADMD student chapter meeting, so expect to hear good things from us! University of British Columbia (Nancy Vertel) (NO NEW UPDATES) - Train the Trainer – Special Olympics – Special Smiles, Long Beach, CA Nancy - Speak w/ dean about incorporating more hours of didactic sessions or practical instruction on the management of special needs patient in the undergraduate curriculum. Making headway. - American Academy of Dental Research - Conference - Transition to 1st year pediatric resident Shan Sun. o 1st year pediatric resident o research project with special needs Georgetown University (Ms. Marisa Brown, Dr. Kim Bullock (advisor), and Christine Kim (student leader) o STFM provided a grant to create a unified curriculum from 3 different projects done at residency programs. Through collaboration with AADMD the FRIEND project was created. This project was presented to 35 educators by curriculum developers: Deb Dreyfus, Sweetie Jain, Kim Bullock, Marisa Brown, Laurie Woodard at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Spring Conference in Baltimore, MD in May 2013. o The FRIEND Project is on the AADMD website: http://aadmd.org/page/friend-residency-pilot-project College of Oral Health Sciences University of Technology in Jamaica (Laurian Lue Yen) (not in attendance) - Dental Program is fairly new (3 classes) Many people have been interested in being apart of AADMD, due to “Brush UP Jamaica” project the AADMD chapter is not functioning at its full potential Goal: Have a Day for Special Smiles event in October 2013 International Voluntary Project August 2013 o International dental students participating o Provide free treatment o Not specific for ID/DD, but welcomed o All-inclusive resort included o INFO: Laurain Lue Yen: laurian.lueyen@gmail.com o o o We will be sending an updated brochure for printing and distribution.
