AADMD Annual Conference April 26-28 in Mesa, AZ – show pictures

 Congratulations to Sarah Usher, Abra Caroci, Angela Lee, and Dub Freeman

(AZ), Nancy Vertel (British Columbia), Abe Itty (MA), and Michelle

Cornacchia (NJ) presented oral presentations at the annual conference

 Multiple students presented posters and we had 3 dental students from

Pittsburgh present with their advisor Dr. Taiclet

 Networking: Dr. Korson from Tufts would like to start a student/resident chapter and will reach out to other health care professionals affiliated with other institutions

 Networking: Dr. Kripke discussed her approach to treating her patients with

ID/DD using a neurodevelopmental profile and listing of support systems.

She would be willing to come to one of our meetings to present for 10-15min on how to improve medical/dental curriculum to better serve individuals with ID/DD

 Idea: Dr. Kripke and Ari Ne’eman with Autistic Self-Advocacy Network with the motto “Nothing About us Without Us” -> learn more about organization and Autistic culture and than expand to see if any self-advocates would like to be involved

 Board meeting – agreed to include other health care students as student members (PT, OT, ST, nursing, pre-med, etc) to broaden our comradelier

 Unified project -> March “Disabilities Awareness” Month -> End the R Word

Chapters in ¼ (about 50) of the dental and medical schools in the US

 Special Hope Foundation – UCEDD o Partnering with AADMD for grants - UCCED (one in each state) o Traditionally not focused on healthcare or adults o Promote health care for adults with developmental disabilities o 2 or 4 grants available initially ($25-50,000), possible second round of grants o best practice model for relationship between UCCED and AADMD, other states can adopt o TIMELINE: RFP out in Sept 2013. Possible Oct start date with UCCED o Darci (special Olympics). o Keep student/residency webpage updated

On June 1st we will participate in Special Smiles in Richmond, KY. o So far, we have about thirty students from the school signed up to attend. o During the event we will hold our first official AADMD student chapter meeting, so expect to hear good things from us!

MedFest April 20 th Health Screening (CANCELED) o NY state school system req physicals for all students. Most kids have had a sports physical.

Awareness in high school -> discuss with schools about what they need from us in order to better learn about disabilities and potentially talk about the medical and dental students/residents experiences in serving individuals with ID/DD

Eddie Week is a patient with special needs who has generously given funds to internist to train students who would like to work with individuals with special needs. Trying to meet with Mr. Week.

Trying to include both dental and medical students (5-10) – need forms from medical students who are looking for a faculty advisor and approval from their school. In the summer they will encourage incoming students to join.
