Individualized Clinical Training Plan (ICTP)
EXAMPLE: Student interested in pursuing an academic career at a Research I university
1. Statement of Career Goals
My career goal is to conduct clinical research at a Research I academic institution to understand the
etiology of depression and use the knowledge to improve intervention/prevention. In addition, I am
passionate about teaching and education.
2. Competency goals for clinical work prior to internship
Prior to internship, my goals for clinical work are to 1) receive strong generalist training in assessment
and treatment; 2) develop specialized training in mood disorders (especially depression); 3) develop a
developmental focus in which I learn to treat both adults and children with mood disorders.
3. Types of internships being considered
I will primarily apply to sites that provide opportunities to: 1) fine tune my clinical skills in the CBT
treatment of depression, and 2) conduct research. I will only apply to sites that identify as clinical
science or scientist-practitioner (i.e., I will exclude scholar-practitioner sites).
4. Proposed plan for clinical work – include psychotherapy, assessment, and/or group experiences
and how these meet proposed competency goals. REMINDER: Ensure that the following is included
in your plan: two assessments at the Clinic, leftover group credits (can be fulfilled at externship),
minimum TOTAL 600 face-to-face by October 31st of year 5 (with a minimum of 200 proposed for 4th
year and beyond).
a. Year 3 of practicum (4th year in program):
Externship at Depression Specialty Track at VA:
- On site 1-2 days/ 8-10 hours per week
- Specialized training in the treatment and assessment of depression
b. Year 4 of practicum (5th year in program):
Clinical work at MSU Psychological Clinic
- Focus on one child and one adult depression case, 2 hours/week

c. Year 5 of practicum (6th year in program):

a. Which ones and why?

I think this externship will provide unique opportunities to work with inpatient populations with
severe mood disorders.
b. What are the requirements/deadlines?
1
The application will consiste of a letter of interest, a CV, and three recommendation letters. They
accept applications throughout the year.
c. What experiences will you get there?

interpersonal therapy for depression, behavioral activation, etc.). I will most likely treat two
individual clients and co-lead two groups.
6. Plans for any additional clinical experiences, e.g., through Clinic Coordinator position or labbased clinical work.
