How these sentences differ from or are similar to English Significant focus or change in KS1 Significant focus or change in KS2 N/A Changes • Can study any ancient or modern language • Less focus on inter-cultural • understanding New content or emphasis • Teaching should focus on making • ‘significant progress’ in one language • Balance of spoken and written language • Focus on practical communication • Basic understanding of grammar • Focus on developing accurate pronunciation • Greater emphasis on being able to write in the language Recommendations/guidelines from own research, training/courses, professional body: e.g. timetabling guidance, cross-curricular links, national initiatives etc. Very difficult to find any professional body committed to language teaching - internet search mostly returns out of date information. http://networkforlanguageslondon.org.uk/ This was the only website I could find with relevant and current information regarding Languages for KS2 Implications for budget and organisation: e.g. training, staffing, resources, teaching spaces, storage, timetabling, visits/visitors etc Staffing/training will be an issue. Who will teach the subject? Emphasis on making significant progress on only one language so will need to focus on one language going through the key stage. How will we assess? Maybe have to investigate using a published scheme for consistency throughout the key stage Very limited specific content suggested.
