Elementary Japanese 2 (Japanese 102)
Spring 2011 Syllabus
This course will continue an introduction to the basics of modern Japanese. While
emphasis will be on the spoken language, students will learn nearly 100 Kanji characters.
The goal is to finish off chapter 6 and cover next six chapters of the text. Pre-requisite:
Japanese 101 or the course coordinator’s permission.

My office hours are Tuesday from 12 pm to 1pm (also by appointment on Thursdays).

Schedule
Japanese classes meet one hour (really 50 minutes) from Monday to Friday (except for
Wednesday) for a total of four hours each week. The lecture is conducted in a
combination of English and Japanese. The other three hours are conducted completely
in Japanese. There are two sections of J102:

2) No more than 8 days of absences, i.e., if you miss more than 8 meetings you will
receive an F automatically
Grades
Final exam (including oral which is half of the grade) 20%
Recorded oral performances 20%
Mid-term (including oral which is half of the grade) 20%
Class participation and attendance 20%
Quizzes (every week on Friday) 10%
Homework (must be handed in by due dates to be counted toward the grade) 10%
*Note that somewhat over 60% of the final mark will be determined by speaking and
listening (which includes class attendance/participation).
