Teresa Flippo-Morton, MD, Surgical Oncology Fund About Dr. Teresa Flippo-Morton Dr. Teresa Flippo-Morton was one of Charlotte’s leading breast cancer surgeons. Since completing her surgical training at Carolinas Medical Center in 1991, Dr. Flippo-Morton had treated an estimated 2,300 women with breast cancer, many of whom credit her with saving their lives. In the words of Levine Cancer Institute President Dr. Derek Raghavan, “She was a gentle, empathetic, generous and kind physician, so much loved by her patients and their families, who recognized her passion for her work, as well as her ability to care for each one of them and to provide superb judgment, knowledge and care.” Dr. Flippo-Morton passed away at the age of 55, after a brief courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. About the Teresa Flippo-Morton, MD, Surgical Oncology Fund Carolinas HealthCare Foundation established the Teresa Flippo-Morton, MD, Surgical Oncology Fund to support educational and research opportunities for residents and fellows in surgical oncology. In 2010, Dr. Flippo-Morton developed a fellowship at CMC that offered extra training for surgeons interested in breast disease. It has graduated five physicians, two of whom practice in North Carolina. Dr. Richard White, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and friend of Dr. Flippo-Morton, said these efforts will continue her legacy. “My hope is that her gifts are passed on to patients who are seen by her fellows. That’s the best we can all hope for, to have an impact, like watching the ripples when you throw a rock into a pond.” About Levine Cancer Institute Levine Cancer Institute (LCI) was formed by Carolinas HealthCare System as a part of an innovative vision to bring world-class cancer care directly to the Carolinas region. Building upon CHS’ extensive network of cancer centers throughout the Carolinas, LCI is comprised of community-based cancer programs that advance the highest level of cancer treatment, scientific research, education, survivorship care, and prevention programming close to where patients live. The Institute also facilitates access to specialists, clinical trials, and important support services. LCI has recruited oncologists from top-ranked programs across the country and has grown to include a network of more than 17 locations throughout the Carolinas, caring for approximately 15,000 new cancer cases yearly. The headquarters facility in Charlotte includes a Phase I clinical trials unit, which supports cutting edge research including novel therapies in the earliest stages of development. Clinical activity at this location also includes care for patients with rare and complex cancer conditions. LCI’s ultimate goal is to reduce cancer incidence, increase survivorship rates, and improve the level of wellness among cancer patients in the Carolinas, while reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to receive comprehensive, coordinated, specialized care.
