Novelties for High-Temperature Applications:
N-SiC-Kiln Furniture, CaO-ZrO2 Thermo-Couple
Protection Tubes
Morgan Advanced Materials Haldenwanger is at this year’s
ceramitec trade fair going to present two product
novelties aimed for high-temperature applications.
Widely recognized as the market leader in the production
of ceramic thermos-couple protection tubes, we have
developed an outer protection tube made from a special
zirconia grade aiming at extremely high-temperature use.
This material has been commercialized successfully in lead
projects.
In many applications, common outer protection tubes made
from Alsint 99.7 (alumina of 99,7 % purity level) are
unable to cope with high temperatures and/or media attack
and thus show reduced life-time expectancy. Especially, at
very high temperatures of up to 2000 °C and in chemically
aggressive or reducing atmospheres, this new
HaldenwangerTM type of protection tube outperforms the
alumina grade. As the base material, a CaO-doped zirconia
type (purity level >99 %) was chosen. Due to the smart
microstructural design, not only it shows a high degree of
gas-tightness but also an exceedingly resistance against
high-temperature creep.
Beside these technical benefits, this product excels due
to its positive ratio of value-to-cost in the course of
sourcing, and also indirectly as of the reduced
maintenance and retrofit costs as compared to alumina
grades. Outer protection tubes made from CaO-ZrO2 have a
proven history record in applications such as crystal
growth furnaces.
In addition, Morgan Advanced Materials Haldenwanger now
offers reaction-bonded silicon carbide (N-SiC) kiln
furniture under the trade name Halsic-NTM. This material
now completes the full series of SiC materials under the
trade name HaldenwangerTM.
Halsic-NTM represents a refractory ceramic, which may be
used as kiln furniture in the temperature range of up to
1500 °C. Halsic-NTM as compared to other common SiC
materials has particular advantages. Common kiln furniture
shapes such as setter plates, beams, and posts are
produced, which are supplied with or without engobe
coatings.
Furthermore, Halsic-NTM shows repelling effects against
light metal melts, which is why this material is used as
the outer thermo-couple protection tube, being immersed
into the melt for temperature reading.
