Welcome Week and Welcome to NTU
T
o help staff understand the activities on offer,
this document includes a basic outline of the
main events going on throughout Welcome Week. It
also provides more detailed information about the
Welcome to NTU event.
If you have any Welcome Week related
queries please contact:
Zoe Hollingsworth

Please note that the focus has always been that,
Laura Hope
with the exception of Welcome to NTU, course
inductions take priority over Welcome Week.
Welcome Week supports course inductions and creates additional opportunities for students to
make friends, but don’t feel that because Welcome Week is fairly comprehensive there’s no need to
run a busy course induction.
Welcome Week timetable
Welcome Week takes place each year in late September / early October. For exact dates and venues
of events this year, please consult the current Welcome Week Guide which will be available from
late August at www.ntu.ac.uk/welcome or contact a member of the Welcome Week team.

Welcome to NTU
Introduction
Welcome to NTU takes place on the first Monday of Welcome Week and is designed to give students
a definite starting point to their university experience. We use the Royal Concert Hall, the venue that
students also graduate in, and in doing so celebrate both the start and end stage of their studies.
Consisting of three shows, with three academic schools attending each show, student attendance
time is dependent on which school they are studying with. Each show lasts for one hour.

help build a postgraduate community. Direct entrants into later years are welcome to attend
although it is unlikely that we'll have the information to directly invite them. If you are responsible
for these students and would like them to attend, please contact Laura Hope to discuss
arrangements.
Speakers
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Peck, personally welcomes students to the University and is
joined on stage by:

the Dean or Associate Dean from the relevant schools

the President of the Students' Union

a representative from the Welcome Week team to talk about Welcome Week

a guest speaker (who is an NTU alumnus). In 2014 the guest speaker was Joe Sargison, the
founder of the charity Balls to Poverty.
Previous guest speakers have included:

Paul Kenyon from the BBC's Panorama programme

Steve Dixon - Sky News presenter

Steve Trapmore - Olympic gold medalist (Rowing, Sydney 2000)

Louise Holland (2008 Alumnus of the year) - Local Fundraising Director for Cancer Research
UK.
Invitations
Students will be invited directly in their Welcome Week mailings, but please make sure that the
correct time is included in the induction timetable. We would be grateful if you could also mention it
in any communication you send out.
Transport arrangements
Coach and the Unilink transfers service will be arranged for Clifton and Brackenhurst students.
Detailed transport arrangements are posted here during the summer, but in brief:

Clifton students are to use the Unilink service to travel into the city for Welcome to NTU.
Students should be advised to check the Unilink timetable and leave plenty of time for their
journey. Students will have to pay to catch the bus as the Unilink is not free on this day,
however the service will run as a normal day instead.

Brackenhurst students are brought into the city by coach, and following their show have
time spare to spend in the city and explore the city campus before coaches return to
Brackenhurst
