QAS Careers Education Curriculum Mapping (Years 8-12) DRAFT 2013 Students enrolled at Quorn Area School will be entitled to Careers Education from Year 8, beginning in 2014. During their secondary years students will develop their individual Careers Pathway, therefore necessary skills to achieve this will be embedded into the entire curriculum. Assessment and Reporting will reflect the implementation of more explicit Careers Education. With regular review of student progress throughout the year. Designed to expose students to a range of careers they may not have heard of. Areas of Study: University and TAFE entrance requirements (score range), UMAT (for medicine), other pathways into careers, range of careers and their requirements, SUBJECT SPECIFIC English – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are Maths – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are HPE – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are Tech – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are Home Ec – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are Art – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are Music – Highlight jobs available, discuss what these are EXTRA CURRICULA Speakers to discuss career options, where applicable 9 SOSE Unit of work covering a student chosen career. Research based task in which students identify wages/salary, job specifications, person specifications, Investigation of requirements for moving out of home. Students create a folio which includes costs associated with moving, necessary paperwork, housing options, benefits etc. SUBJECT SPECIFIC One task to be completed with a specific careers focus (eg either on a career path or a necessary skill within a chosen field) Example Tasks: English – Journalism: Write a front page article for the local newspaper/interview a member of the community and create a biography Maths – Statistician: Collect statistics; Accountant: Tax HPE – Sports Writer: Write a sports report for the local newspaper Tech – Tradie: Use skills of various trades (carpentry, boilermaker etc) Home Ec – Chef: Research requirements for entry into training; Cake Decorator: Produce a birthday cake for a 5 year old Music – Musician: Write or compose a piece of music Art – Artist: Use skills of various artists; Graphic Designer: Create a magazine cover EXTRA CURRICULA Speakers to discuss career options, where applicable IMPLEMENTATION OF WORK STUDIES (ACARA) Students can undertake studies in this area for a full year, in either Year 9 or 10, or both years. “The Work Studies Years 9-10 Curriculum under the NTC initiative will support young people to further enhance the knowledge, understanding, skills, behaviours and dispositions to manage their learning, work and life in self-directed ways.” (Draft Shape Paper: Work Studies, ACARA, 2012) 10 PLP (SACE REQUIREMENT, C Level, 10 Credits) Subject requires students to undertake work experience, personality testing, careers trip, goal setting and begin to map their career path. SUBJECT SPECIFIC Learning and Assessment tasks in all curriculum areas work with students and their identified needs. UNIVERSITY/TAFE ADMISSION Students are given time and direction in enrolling for chosen University/TAFE courses once Research Project has been completed (semester 2 only) *This document is up for consultation for 2013, with the aim of implementation beginning 2014. This will require 7-12 Curriculum Mapping day in Week 0, 2014.
