RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Regional Differences in Acculturative Stress Among Asian American College Students,

Smith College

Examined whether certain aspects of acculturative stress (English language proficiency, heritage language proficiency, pressures to acculturate, and pressures against acculturation) differ among Asian American college students as a function of the region in which the college is located

Hypothesis: Students living in US regions with a low Asian American population may experience higher levels of acculturative stress

Found significant regional group differences in regards to pressures in English language proficiency and pressures against acculturation – Asian American college students living in the Midwest reported greater pressures against acculturation and increased pressures for English Language Proficiency than Asian American students living in other regions of the country

Presented research at the American Psychological Association 2013 Convention
