York’s Five-Star Hotel Prepares
For 5th Anniversary Celebrations
The Grand Hotel & Spa, York turns 5 on Thursday 7th May 2015
York’s only five-star hotel, the Grand Hotel & Spa, celebrates its fifth anniversary this Thursday (7th May
2015).
The stunning £25m hotel opened in May 2010 following the extensive refurbishment of the Grade II* listed
former North Eastern Railway headquarters – regarded as one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings
The building was originally constructed in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for what was then one of the most
powerful public companies in the country. Now it is the region’s leading luxury hotel and has established a
global reputation for its first-class service, stylish bedrooms and unique historic atmosphere.
Having already won many plaudits and awards – including its prized 5 star status and two Rosettes from the
AA in November 2011 - The Grand is now looking to a glittering future with the hotel’s new owners,
Splendid Hospitality Group, recently submitting ambitious plans to the City of York Council as part of a
proposed £15 million, 2 year redevelopment.
Building on the success of the past 5 years, Splendid Hospitality Group are set to take the hotel to new
heights for the benefit of both those that are visiting this wonderful city and the local community who
make use of the five-star facilities as non-residents.

As it stands today, the hotel boasts 107 elegant guest rooms, 13 suites, The Grand Bar and Whisky Room.
Dedicated conference and banqueting facilities are also available, including the aptly named Grand
Boardroom.
For those seeking a little pampering and relaxation, Spa at the Grand welcomes guests with a swimming
pool, spa whirlpool, Nordic dry sauna, aromatic steam room, relaxation lounge and treatment rooms.
In October of 2014, renowned Chef Craig Atchinson joined the team at the Grand as Head Chef having
previously worked with TV Chef James Martin in nearby Malton. Diners in the hotel’s restaurant, Hudson’s,
have already been impressed with Craig’s new, stylish menus with dishes that demonstrate flair whilst
showcasing the best in Yorkshire produce.
It has certainly been an impressive initial 5 years for the hotel but the team at The Grand are confident that
those that are about to follow will be even grander.
