5230 - LATE ARRIVAL AND EARLY DISMISSAL
It is necessary that a student be in attendance throughout the school day in order to benefit fully from the
educational program of the School. The Governing Board recognizes, however, that from time-to-time
compelling circumstances require that a student be late to school or dismissed before the end of the
school day.
As agent responsible for the education of the children of this School, the Board shall require that the
school be notified in advance of such absences by written, personal request of the student's parent, which
shall state the reason for the tardiness or early dismissal. The determination of justifiable reasons not
specifically outlined by this policy shall be determined by the Chief Administrative.
If one (1) parent has been awarded custody of the student by the courts, the parent of custody shall
provide the school with a copy of the custody order and inform the school in writing of any limitations in
the rights of the noncustodial parent. Absent such notice, the school will presume that the student may be
released into the care of either parent.
No student who has a medical disability which may be incapacitating may be released without a person to
accompany him/her.
No student shall be released to anyone who is not authorized such custody by the parents.
Early Dismissal to Participate in Extracurricular Activities at a Student’s District of Residence
Any student that has attained a grade of “Proficient” or higher in at least 70% of their graded
competencies is eligible for early dismissal to participate in an extracurricular activity at their district of
residence. This justifiable reason for early dismissal may be utilized by the student no more than twice
per academic trimester.
Students and parents requesting early dismissal under this provision must complete Form 5230 and
submit the form to the Chief Academic Officer no later than two school days prior to the date of early
dismissal. Failing to submit the form on time will be grounds for denial. The Chief Academic Officer will
be the sole judge of completeness, and is authorized to deny any request that does not include a
completed Form 5230.
Students that have not attained a grade of “Proficient” or higher in at least 70% of their graded
competencies may not be dismissed early for the purposes of participating in an extracurricular activity at
their district of residence.
Procedure for Early Dismissal
The following procedure must be followed for early dismissal of any student:
A. Only the Chief Administrative Officer may release a student from school before the end of the
school day.
B. The Chief Administrative Officer may release students before the end of a school day only upon
presentation of a written and/or face-to-face request from the child's parent or for emergency
reasons. All requests for early dismissal to participate in an extracurricular activity at their district
of residence must be received written via Form 5230.
C. Requests for early dismissal should be submitted to the Chief Administrative Officer as early in
the school day as possible.
D. Students may be released only to a parent or to a properly-identified person authorized in writing
by the parent to act on their behalf.
E. A student may be released "on his/her own" only with verified parental permission.
When a parent telephones a request that a child be released early from school, the identity of the caller
and any custodial arrangements should be confirmed before the child is permitted to leave. If the parent is
calling from home, the school can verify the request by a return telephone call. In the event the telephone
call is not being made from the child's residence, the caller should be asked detailed questions about the
child. These questions might include the child's date of birth, the courses s/he is studying, names of
teachers and classmates, and similar facts which should be known to his/her parents.
