Enter Beakerhead: a movement that encourages the collision of ‘things technical’ with ‘things creative’, through year-round education and outreach programs involving unconventional combinations of art and culture, science and technology, culminating in an eruption of public expression every September. WHAT IS BEAKERHEAD? A SANDBOX FOR INGENUITY Geographically centered in Calgary, Canada – a creative, engineering and entrepreneurial hub – Beakerhead attracts and engages the world. For five days each September, Beakerhead brings Calgary to life with unconventional combinations of art and engineering: from mechanical creations and electric performances, to international innovation challenges and community workshops. Year-round Beakerhead’s education and outreach programs strengthen the ties between the creative and technical sectors by engaging youth in hands-on experiences, and growing networks that foster innovation through workshops and events. In 2013, the inaugural Beakerhead delighted Calgary and visitors by opening a highly entertaining door onto the world of science and engineering. “Years from now people will look back to September 2013 as the moment when science and magic converged.” Commander John B. Herrington, Astronaut The first year created powerful experiences, generating pictures and stories that travelled the world: In Person Attendees Students Involved Volunteer Hours Social Media Activity Earned Media Impressions Paid Media Impressions (top sponsors) 62,500 live encounters 4,300 students and 28 schools 1,496 shifts by 252 volunteers 2.1 million+ social media mentions 60.3 million 9.2 million The concept and experiences resonated strongly for people and has set Beakerhead up for a period of strong growth through the crucial next three years, as it builds a solid foundation. 3 IT MATTERS! As a culture and economy, we talk about the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education as a driver of innovation. How do you ignite it? Let’s add art. An ambitious vision and massive collaborative effort, Beakerhead reaches out to students, artists and engineers from all disciplines and encourages local, Canadian and international visitors to come together in Calgary to create and learn. By opening up the worlds of science and engineering through art and culture, we as individuals and as a society can realize our full potential. Delightful on the surface; strategic through the core: Inspire Tomorrow’s Workforce Every child should have the chance to integrate creativity and technical knowledge into who they are and how they will contribute to society.
