Job Description Coast and Countryside Ranger Grade: 6 Directorate: People and Places Section: Operations Responsible to: Coast and Countryside Manager Responsi ble for: Volunteers and Contractors and temporary staff as appropriate Location: Wyre Coast, Urban Natural Areas, Wyre Estuary, Countryside Areas and other locations as required. Post Title: Post No: Overall Job Purpose: The operational land management of key wildlife and visitor recreational sites and facilities and the implementation of the coast and countryside programme for the delivery of biodiversity and landscape protection, community engagement, cohesion and health and well-being, sustainable tourism and access for all. Key Tasks & Responsibilities: 1. To provide day to day land management and a vigilant uniformed presence through regular patrolling of Council owned or managed outdoor visitor facilities, protected areas, recreational areas, promoted routes and public rights of ways to ensure high standards are maintained. (Patrolling is a means to encourage good visitor behaviour, provide visitor information, site inspection and to deter vandalism, litter and other forms of anti-social behaviour.) 2. To train, organise, supervise and lead volunteers on practical coast and countryside management tasks, to support their personal development and to enable effective participation through the management of volunteer hubs. 3. To support the council in the delivery of its Biodiversity Duty, in particular with regard to protected landscapes, habitats, and species through interpretive and management programmes. 4. To undertake operational management of coast and countryside visitor centres. 5. To liaise with other council teams, partners, stakeholders and contractors as a part of a multi-agency approach, to tackling environmental and community safety issues and to educate and raise awareness through community engagement. 6. To support and provide advice to the local community and businesses on initiatives which benefit informal recreation, health and well-being, economic regeneration, rural and coastal tourism and landscape conservation. 7. To maintain regular contact with local communities including neighbourhoods, Town and Parish Councils, recreational users and landowners to identify, develop and lead on specific coast and countryside management projects, and to plan expenditure, source partnership funding and monitor project costs and project outputs accordingly for landscape, biodiversity and access. 8. To maintain a network of contacts with local schools, youth groups and older peoples groups and encourage active involvement in the coast and countryside and urban natural areas of Wyre. 9. To enable public participation in the natural environment to encourage health and wellbeing and community cohesion through the delivery of interpretive activities including the guided walks, health walks, talks, festivals and environmental education. 10. To identify and develop access for all opportunities in conjunction with user groups (e.g. special needs groups). 11. To monitor, observe and take appropriate enforcement action in respect of all contraventions of legislation and byelaws relating to dogs and litter and other environmental crimes including education, issuing fixed penalty notices and giving evidence. 12. To be responsible for council vehicles, equipment and supplies allocated for the post holder and for the team of volunteers the post holder is managing. 13. To contribute to the strategic development of the coast and countryside and urban natural areas. 14. To undertake any other responsibilities appropriate to the status of the post as may be directed from time to time.
