Hogg Middle School Incoming 8th Grade Summer Reading 2014 International Baccalaureate World School – MYP Due Date: September 19 This summer, Hogg MS students will develop an understanding of what it means to be an IB student by exploring the ten IB Learner profile attributes and using the profiles to analyze an assigned work of fiction. Each student is expected to read the two required reading books for his/her grade level, select two books from the choice A list and select 2 additional books to read. Before returning to school each entering 8th grade student will have read a total of 6 novels. Required reading books: Read the following 2 books and complete the IB Learner Profile chart in this packet for each book. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In the not-too-distant future the United States has collapsed and has been replaced by the totalitarian regime, Panem. Katniss becomes a contestant in the annual Hunger Games, a televised, gladiator-like contest where teens compete to the death. (You may read any book in the series) We are Witnesses: Five Diaries of Teenagers Who Died in the Holocaust by Jacob Boas. This book is a credit to the human spirit, courage, and strength of these five teenagers as they faced the Holocaust and World War II. Choice A List: Select 2 novels to read from this list and write a one page essay (on one of the novels) explaining which 3 IB Learner Profiles the main character exhibited. Be sure to give text evidence. Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. After being sold to a cruel couple in New York City, a slave named Isabel spies for the rebels during the Revolutionary War. Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. Relive the dramatic events in the Revolutionary War through the eyes of a young fourteen year-old silversmith’s apprentice. Journey with him as he encounters John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and other famous men of American history. Experience the drama of the Tea Party and the heat of battle at the Battle of Lexington. Legend by Marie Lu. (Any book in the series) In a dark future, when North America has split into two warring nations, fifteen-year-olds Day, a famous criminal, and prodigy June, the brilliant soldier hired to capture him, discover that they have a common enemy. Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Uncle Tom’s Cabin began as a serial in the abolitionist weekly, The National Era. The importance of Stowe’s work was as evident at the time it was first published as it is today. A story of suffering and compassion, Uncle Tom’s Cabin depicts slavery as honestly as it denounces it. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. This is the story of one African – American family fighting to stay together and strong in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South during the 1930’s. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. This is a nineteenth-century science fiction tale of an electric submarine, its eccentric captain, and an undersea world. Their Skeletons Speak: Kennewick Man and the Paleoamerican World by Sally M. Walker. This book explores the discovery and controversy surrounding the identification of the Kennewick Man, a nine thousand year old skeleton whose remains were found in a riverbed in Washington State in 1996. Challenging Read: Isaac’s Storm by Eric Larson. The greatest Natural disaster in American history happened in Galveston, 1900! Read about this true story. You will not be able to put this book down.
