Meeting called to order by Aura Lee Loveland at 11:05 am.
Workshop: “Personal Historians and Genealogists, Two Worlds or One World?” presented by
Connie Lenzen, a board-certified genealogist for thirty years. She is certified by the Board for
Certification of Genealogists.
Connie talked about how personal historians can utilize the tools and skills of professional
genealogists to enhance and enrich their work and shared ways that stories can be fact-checked
for accuracy and provide tips on how historical context can be located. Handout information is
posted at the end of these meeting notes.

2013 – APH National Annual Conference in Washington, DC – Nov. 8-12, 2013
2013 – APH – PDX meeting dates:
-September 9 - Scott Reames, corporate historian for Nike
-November 18 – Annual review and celebration and potluck lunch




2013 – OHS Personal History Day – Brina [We will discuss this at a future meeting.]
Northwest Film Center, School of Film requests that we allow cross-promotional
activities by letting them advertise their educational opportunities to our group and they
will reciprocate by allowing us to provide them with information about our group. The
APH members at the meeting agreed to allow this.
Chapter Mailing List: Emily Garcia is developing a chapter mailing list for our local APH
group members and one for guests. She will also update the local APH Member
Directory and the Internal Contact List.
John Hawkins is collecting dues of $20/per person. Make checks payable to “APH
Portland” and send to John Hawkins, 5539 Bellflower Ct. SE, Salem, OR 97306.
Announcements of general interest, updates, etc.
 Aura Lee Loveland and Beverly Warren-Leigh briefly discussed their three-year Brix
project which included preservation of documents and photos and currently two books
available for sale at the Columbia River Maritime Museum and from the Appelo
Archives Center: The Brix Logging Story: In the Woods of Washington and Oregon and
The Brix Maritime Story: A Century of Towboating and Barging. They are in the process
of completing a genealogy book for this project as well.
 Aura Lee and Bev also recommended the Appelo Archive Center which, according to the
web site is the perfect location to find information and do research on photos, cemetery
records, Finnish, Swedish and Columbia River History and also find newspapers and
books on the history of the Pacific Northwest, including logging, fishing, farming, events,

 Aura Lee Loveland is celebrating ten years in the personal history business
 Aura Lee and Gloria Nussbaum had a client in common who passed away recently:
Elizabeth “Beth” Nance, founder of the North Portland Bible College. Her son developed
a web site based on the work that Aura Lee and Gloria did: http://bethnance.com/
 Jeannine Florance is changing the name of her business to Our Lives, Our Stories.
