2013 Weather Unit Hurricane Project Due Wednesday 2-27-13 SES5. Students will investigate the interaction of insolation and Earth systems to produce weather and climate. a. Explain how latitudinal variations in solar heating create atmospheric and ocean currents that redistribute heat globally. b. Explain the relationship between air masses and the surfaces over which they form. c. Relate weather patterns to interactions among ocean currents, air masses, and topography. d. Describe how temperature and precipitation produce the pattern of climate regions (classes) on Earth. e. Describe the hazards associated with extreme weather events and climate change (e.g., hurricanes, tornadoes, El Niño/La Niña, global warming). f. Relate changes in global climate to variation in Earth/Sun relationships For your unit project you will be researching a hurricane in the Atlantic basin. The basic format is an informative, visually appealing poster. There may only be one person per storm per class. You may pick any storm you wish, as long as you can find the data. Include the following on your poster: A) B) C) D) E) F) G) H) I) Name of storm Your name and class period Satellite or CGI picture of the actual storm. Dates from time given name (tropical storm) until dissipation Data Table showing all dates and the following information: Lat, Lon, Pressure, Wind speed (mph or K), Category (first entry of the day) Map of path using NHS colors and symbols At least 2 additional pictures One page summary explaining cost, general path, deaths, progression through stages, location of landfall, recorded high wind speed, recorded low pressure, interesting facts, rating at various locations. 1page, 1” margins TBLR, 12pt Times New Roman, Double spaced, no need for heading. Poster must be well put together, neat, orderly, and with no pictures falling off Info on Hurricanes (USE THESE, BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN ALL THE INFO YOU NEED) www.nhc.noaa.gov/2012atlan.shtml www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Storm_pages/sandy2012/ Teacher Rubric for Hurricane Poster Basics Pictures Name of Storm, Your Name, Period, Dates Missing one element 3 2 Satellite / CGI, plus 2 additional pictures 3 Path Data Table Paper *A plagiarized paper results in a zero on this project Quality Missing satellite or additional picture Missing more than one element 1 Missing 2 pictures Missing 2 or more elements 0 Missing 3 required pictures 2 1 0 Map with path, correct colors, and symbols for entire duration 3 Missing one element Missing 2 elements Missing 3 or more elements 2 1 0 Date, L, L, P, WS, Cat listed for entire duration of storm One element is missing, or dates are not all present 2-3 elements are missing, or dates are not all present Chart is missing, or 4 or more elements are missing, or dates are not all present 3 2 1 0 High quality paper with required information, correct format, 1page Paper lacks quality, missing some of the required information, slight infractions on length and format Paper is of low quality, lacking most of the required information, too short, and/ or totally incorrect format Paper is missing or of terrible quality, and clearly lacks any effort. 9 6 3 0 Poster is of high quality, all elements well put together Poster has elements falling off, poster is not neat, sloppy elements Poster was clearly thrown together at the last minute, little effort was given in the preparation of poster 4 2 /25 0 -Poster is due at the beginning of your class period on 2-27.
