Description of IPP
Along with developing the student’s strengths and challenges, the Program Planning Team will develop the
Annual Individual Outcomes (AIOs). (Annual individualized outcomes are statements of expected
achievement over one school year. These statements are estimates of future performance based on past
achievements, present performance, and priority areas of desired development). There should be no more
than three AIOs per year/semester. At this level, the Focus of the AIOs must be indicated – Academic, Life
Skills or Social Skills and then within Academic, further details in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy, Other
and Enrichment can be provided.
For Academic IPPs, it must be indicated in which subjects/courses the AIOs will be covered. The course look
up allows you to attach Course Code(s) for which the student in enrolled.
Classroom/Subject teachers are responsible for the Specific Individual Outcomes (SIOs). (Specific
individualized outcomes are statements outlining steps that lead to the attainment of the annual individualized
outcomes. Specific individualized outcomes are arranged according to the development process involved and
expected progression toward identified annual outcomes). A Course Code for each SIO must be indicated.
There should be no more than 3 – 4 SIOs per subject/course area for each AIO.
SIOs should be incremental - there should be something to report on for each reporting period
Details for each SIO (Course Code, Specific Individualised Outcome Educational Strategy,
Materials/Equipment, Persons Responsible) must be included to create an IPP. The Update on Progress can
be added to regularly and will be helpful during the review process.
Course Code – you can put multiple course codes in the elementary IPP but only one course code for junior
high and senior high IPPs.
Specific Individual Outcome – this outcome should be measureable and have a date attached for completion.
Educational Strategies – the teacher is responsible for listing strategies that will be used with the student to
assist with achieving the outcome.
Materials & Equipment – the teacher must list materials and equipment that will be used to assist the student
in achieving the outcome.
Persons Responsible for Implementation and Evaluation – use the Insert Statements to avoid having to use
individual names. Also Click here for IPP Matrix links to a matrix helpful for evaluating the outcomes.
Update on Progress – teachers can informally write anecdotal information on the progress the student is
making with the SIO. Classroom teachers are not expected to use Grade Book to track outcomes for students
on IPPs. They will need to use Grade Book to input grades for each reporting period.
Other Notes for Description of IPP section
Click on Add Row to create another SIO row for the same AIO.
Deleting AIO – if you uncheck the box by Add Additional AIO it will delete the AIO and any SIOs that are
attached to it. If you delete by mistake, you can just recheck the box and it will bring all the information
back.
To delete a row click on the garbage can icon, which will turn the whole row red. You must then click on
Save, Continue Editing for the row to delete.
The TIENET system will organize SIOs by course titles.
 Two teachers can’t be working on the same section of the IPP at the same time – an error message will appear.
3)
Transition Section – completed for students on an IPP who require transitioning outcomes (strongly suggested
for students 14 years and older, optional for other students).
4)
Reviewing & Reporting:



Review Dates – you must set at least two review dates to formally review the IPP. One of these dates must be at
the end of the school year or semester.
Signatures – there are places to indicate that the parents/guardian, student (if appropriate) and principal have
signed the document. The check box by the principal’s signature must be checked off to allow the document’s
status to be changed to final at the end of the school year. Note: if you do not keep a hard copy of the signature
page you may scan the page with the signatures and then attached the scanned file to the electronic copy of the
IPP - see How to Attach a File to a Document
The IPP can be kept in Draft status until June when it must be set to Final.
HIGH SCHOOLS – VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION
For students attending high schools with semestered courses, there will need to be an IPP for each semester to
accommodate new classes/subjects. At each semester, the IPP will only have access to the courses the student is
enrolled in for that semester. The IPP for first semester will have to be put to final at the end of the semester. The
IPP from first semester can then be copied for second semester. The copied IPP will then have access to courses for
second semester. You will only be able to copy the IPP for second semester after second semester begins.
To Print an IPP:
1.
2.
From an open IPP, click on the Print icon on the Actions bar.
Choose from Print This Section, Selected Sections, or All Sections (for a complete IPP, choose All Sections).
For a more polished document, it is suggested to turn off the Headers and Footers so that the Web Address and
other “Internet info” don’t print on the document. To do this depends on the Internet browser you are using.
- in Mozilla FireFox, click File (at the top left of your screen), then Page Setup, then Margins &
Header/Footer. Under Headers & Footers, choose blank for all columns available, then OK.
- in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Print, then Page Setup. From the drop-down choices under Headers &
Footers, choose Empty for each available column, then OK.
Hint: If you do not see the Print Icon, you are probably still in Edit mode and you will need to click on Save,
Continue Editing, and then Cancel. You should now see the Print Icon.
To Review an IPP:

In TIENET, to review an IPP, the status of the plan needs to change to Review.

Many high schools are deciding that it is best (and easiest) to create and complete
separate IPPs for each semester if the courses are different.
In TIENET, document statuses are as follows …
Draft is for creating and editing a document.
Review is for securing the document and being able to review and add updates
and notes.
Final is when the document is finalized and unable to be changed at all.
Changing the Status of a Document
Open the IPP document and click Cancel if it is in Edit mode as TIENET automatically
opens a document allowing the user to edit.
With the document now open, go
to More Actions, then Change
Status of This Document.
Beside Change status from
Draft to, click the drop-down
arrow, choose Review, then
Accept.
Back on the student’s documents page, the status of the document will now be Review.
To review, click on Edit This Section at the top of
the document.
Reviewing IPP Outcomes
Within the IPP, under Description of Individualised Program Plan, each SIO is reviewed individually
(which should happen twice per school year according to NS DOE policy). It is good practice
that IPP reviews happen prior to school reporting periods to be able to support and inform the IPP
report. To review, under Update on Progress, notes can be made, dated and added to the plan.
Also at this time, additional SIOs can be added to the plan.
Jan.21/13 - Z. can distinguish between loonies and toonies with 90%+ accuracy. Work is now more focussed on using quarters.
May 15/13 – Z. now distinguishes between …. We will not focus on pennies as they have been discontinued as Canadian currency.
Remember to save changes as they are made using Save, Done Editing or Save, Continue Editing.
