MEETING OF THE STUDENT AND ATHLETIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE

WESTERN CAROLINA BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Student and Athletic Affairs Committee of Western Carolina University’s Board of

Trustees met on June1, 2009, in HFR 540. The Chair, Mr. Steve Warren presided.

The following members of the Committee were present: Joshua Cotton, Teresa Williams, and Steve Metcalf.

Others present included: Vice Chancellor Miller; Mr. Chip Smith, Director of Athletics; and Ms. Welch, Committee Secretary.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Ms. Williams moved that the minutes of the December 2, 2008 regular meeting be approved as mailed. Mr. Frixen seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.

REPORT FROM ATHLETICS

Mr. Smith reported that the Softball Team ended the season with twelve wins and thirty five losses. Women’s Tennis ended the season with six wins and fifteen losses.

Women’s Golf placed sixth in the Southern Conference Tournament and Men’s Golf finished third. The Baseball Team finished the season with thirty-five wins and twentytwo losses and finished fourth in the Southern Conference Tournament. Men’s Outdoor

Track finished first in the Southern Conference Championships, received three of the four outstanding performer awards, and Danny Williamson was named Coach of the Year.

Women’s Track finished second place in the Southern Conference Championship and received two of the four outstanding performer awards. Fifteen track athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet and Manteo Mitchell qualified for the NCAA

Championships 400 dash for a third consecutive year. WCU had more student athletes named to the Southern Conference Winter Academic All-Conference Team than any other school with twenty-three. Thirty-four student-athletes will be named to the Spring

Academic All Conference Team. Ross Heffley, baseball, was selected to the Louisville

Slugger Freshman All America Team. Softball player Mollie Fowler and baseball player

Brent Greer were chosen to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information All State

Team. Norman West, WCU Alumnus, was honored with the Southern Conference

Distinguished Service Award for his longtime support of WCU Athletics. WCU Men’s teams placed fourth in the Southern Conference’s Commission Cup and the Women’s teams placed fifth in the Germann Cup. Twenty student-athletes were named to conference All Freshman teams and eleven were selected as Southern Conference

Student-Athletes of the Week. The overall team GPA was 3.109 and includes 87 on the

Dean’s List and 18 who earned a 4.0 GPA. Women’s Basketball had the highest cumulative team GPA with a 3.52. The transition of coaches for the football team resulted in the loss of several members and penalties from the NCAA of three scholarships. Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kellie Harper has taken the head

coaching position at NCSU. Karen Middleton has been hired to take her place and has hired Jonelle Street Treka McMillian and Hillary Beck as assistants. Assistant Soccer

Coach Chad Miller has taken the position as head coach at Catawba College and will be replaced by Yhon Stuble.

REPORT FROM THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

Mr. Cotton reported that the inauguration dinner went well and that he and emerald Clark were named Senators of the Year. He is currently looking at new cabinet appointments and is working with Rotimi Arioyo on planning a back to school concert.

REPORT FROM THE STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

Vice Chancellor Miller reported that the new Code of Conduct will be in effect in August and fully complies with the UNC Board of Governors policy definition for due process requirements, complies with the UNC Code requirements for appeals procedures, clarifies behavioral standards, was modified to be made consistent with threat assessment evaluation techniques, and simplified for greater ease of use. A new Director of Campus

Recreation and Wellness was hired; Angela Frederick holds a Master’s Degree from the

University of Southern Mississippi, is a certified wellness educator, and currently serves as the Fitness Center Director at Georgia Gwinnett College. A new Case Manager was hired in the Counseling Center; Amy Worthy holds a Master’s Degree from Troy

University and currently serves as a Clinical Therapist in Brevard and Asheville. The new Assistant Director of Multicultural Affairs, Yolany Gonell, holds a Master’s degree from the University at Buffalo and currently serves as an Area Coordinator at SUNY-

Geneseo. Two new Resident Directors have been hired in Residential Living, Amber

Keen and Miles Basehart. Mike Corelli, who holds a Master’s Degree from Western

Carolina University and currently serves as the Assistant Director for Leadership

Programs, has been hired as the Associate Director for Leadership Programs.

Construction at Balsam Hall has ran into a number of issues which has delayed the project but we are expected to have 75% of the facility available for the opening of the fall semester with the remainder being complete by mid-September.
