Science Experiments Presentations Are you ready for some science experiment FUN? We are going to share science experiments twice a week beginning Thursday, January 29, 2015. We will have one experiment every Wednesday and Friday, and YOU will be the scientists! You will be responsible for presenting one science experiment on one of the dates listed on the next page. The experiment must: Be approved by me (for safety and appropriateness) Include a copy of the experiment with materials and directions Questions and Answers: What topic should my experiment be about? Your experiment topic can be anything science-related, safe, and exciting for you and your classmates. It is meant to be a presentation of a SHORT experiment. However, if you would like to create a longer experiment at home, more like a science fair project, bring your explanation to Miss Tims for approval. Can I change my topic after getting it approved? YES! Just bring Miss Tims a new explanation for your new topic idea. How long should my presentation be? You will have a maximum of 30 minutes to present. You do not have to take the entire 30 minutes. Do I need enough supplies for all students to do the experiment? No, you are only required to present the experiment. However, you are welcome to bring enough for everyone to do it if you would like. Do I have to buy the supplies for the experiment? I will provide dishes, measuring supplies, and other tool supplies for presenting. Additional items (ex: food, liquids, etc.) must be provided. However, there are TONS of experiments that cost little to no money at all (see experiment resources). What if I am absent the day of my experiment? We will reschedule your experiment for another day within a week of your scheduled day. How will I be graded on my experiment? You will receive a grade for presenting your experiment and bringing a written or typed copy of the materials and directions. Please fill out the attached sheet for the days you prefer and experiment topic, and have your parents/guardians sign the sheet. Return it by this Friday, January 9. This activity is probably best done outside in the middle of an abandoned field, or better yet, on a huge lawn. 2. Carefully open the bottle of soda. Position the bottle on the ground so that it will not tip over. 3. Unwrap the whole roll of Mentos. The goal is to drop all of the Mentos into the bottle of soda at the same time (which is trickier than it looks). One method for doing this is to roll a piece of paper into a tube just big enough to hold the loose Mentos. You'll want to be able to position the tube directly over the mouth of the bottle so that all of the candies drop into the bottle at the same time. 4. Don't drop them into the bottle just yet! Warn the spectators to stand back. Okay, you're going to drop all of the Mentos into the bottle at the same time and then get truckin' (move out of the way... so long... bye- bye... hasta la vista!)
