THE WELWYN GARDEN CITY ART CLUB
One of the town’s oldest societies, the original ‘Arts Club’ began life in 1924 with 35 members
including Sir Frederick Osborn and Louis de Soissons. The Club’s aims are to foster an interest in the
visual arts in the local community and provide members with opportunities to develop their skills
and exhibit their art. Regular meetings and workshops are held for members. For more information

HAZEL GREEN
Hazel is a graduate of St Martin’s School of Art in London,
and also studied at St Albans School of Art. For many years
she worked as a designer in London, then turned to
teaching locally. As her family grew up, she rekindled her
interest in art and set up a studio and workshop in
Harpenden. Art and painting remained a passion when she
moved to Kenya for three years, and on her return to the UK
she undertook further studies in ceramics at Hertfordshire
University in Hatfield.
Hazel’s quirky decorative ceramics were hugely popular
when she first exhibited here in 2012, and we are delighted
to welcome her back. Other works in the cabinets are by
Peter Field, who is exhibiting as a member of the Welwyn
Garden City Art Club.
SPECIAL EXHIBITION – ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
The New Maynard Gallery is delighted to present a panel of photographs created by
Ann Gillman-Smith BA, BSc Hons, which led to her being awarded Licentiate of the
Royal Photographic Society in 2013.
To apply to the Royal Photographic Society at Licentiate level requires the submission of a panel of
10 photographs arranged as the author chooses. To be successful, the images must should
demonstrate competency in a variety of photographic skills as well as working well together.
Ann’s panel comprises 10 pictures arranged in three rows, made up of six colour and four
monochrome prints with a mixture of landscape and portrait orientations. The panel is arranged to
allow the observer to move smoothly from the beginning to the last picture with emphasis on start,
central and end images in each row.
Ann is a local photographer who has lived and worked in this area for about 40 years. Her interest in
photography began about 15 years ago and she has been a member of Welwyn Garden
City Photographic Club since 2000.
The New Maynard Gallery congratulates Ann on her achievement and is delighted that her
successful submission may be enjoyed here by a wider audience.
