Through observation, life studies, field work, and extensive hands-on practice, students will develop the ability to see and render the human form, objects, architecture, and nature, enabling them to express ideas in visual form with confidence and clarity. Emphasis will be on the development of observational and rendering skills - improving the ability to see well (and to draw accurately), to correctly render basic geometric shapes (both flat and with volume), to see that nearly all objects can be rendered using these basic shapes in one form or another, to draw objects (including the human forms) and scenes School of Technology for the Arts, Republic Polytechnic T274 Drawing Page 1 with confidence, and to re-draw their own existing scenes/renderings from various perspectives and points-of-view relatively quickly. The application of these skills will be in the visualization aspects of their specific diplomas. The course is structured to be a broad survey of the fundamental skills and concepts related to the discipline of observing and drawing. There will be a balance between drawing from observation and drawings based on construction and concepts. This is in order to equip the students with both the ability to document visual data as well as to visualize their ideas. This module is a fully technical module based on taught skills. This will be done through facilitator demonstrations and individualized coaching. Students are also encouraged to keep sketchbooks for recording of their visual ideas to be discussed and shared in class. School of Technology for the Arts, Republic Polytechnic T274 Drawing Page 2 This is enhanced by field trips to provide a platform for drawing from different observational contexts. Stronger students with prior drawing experience will be given more challenging assignments during and after class to stretch their capabilities.
