Area 5 Background Notes
This statistical investigation area includes a variety of headstones that
indicate different events, occupations and life styles of the people who are
buried here. People buried in this area represent a mix of more and less well
off with plots being a mix Class I, and Class II types. Monuments here are a
mix of the tall and more ornate and simple surname plaques tend to indicate
greater mix of social status. There are also a number of later headstones
alongside older headstones indicating intergenerational use of the plot. There
are a number of life changing events that have claimed the lives of some of
the people buried here in different ways. This small area is representative of
the rich tapestry of human life that is Dunedin’s past.
What is of particular interest?
1. The Biggar family memorial 106/3 indicates two family members who
died during WWI. Peter Biggar was killed in action when the Otago
Infantry Battalion was involved in the bid for the Sari Bair hills and the
push to Chunuk Bair in August 1915. Students will find Peter Biggar on
the CWGC website at
http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14 Peter’s Father
who was in the home service also died in 1918. His CWGC headstone
is on the plot because he is interred here. There is also a CWGC
headstone on the O’Driscoll plot 107/3.
2. There are three accidental deaths in this area. Dickson 106/9, Dick
107/5 and Forsyth 107/17. Encourage students to use the Papers Past
online searchable database and find out what happened to these
people.

Student Recording sheets
The following pages are the student recording sheets for
Area 5 Blocks 106 and 107. Print one copy per group.
Students record the name (they can use initials where they
do not need to look up any further information on those
listed on the inscription), date of death and age from the
inscription into the worksheet. Sometimes there is
information given about date of birth and date of death
and no age. Students can calculate age. They need to list
as many occupants as they can read.
