DISTRICT XII HONOR BAND AUDITIONS District XXII Honor Band is comprised of students from Cobb County who have been selected based on their scores at the Honor Band auditions. Upon selection as a member of the band, students will attend Honor Band weekend on February 7-9, 2014 at Hightower Trail Middle School. This weekend is a fabulous experience for Honor Band members who will spend the weekend working with guest conductors as they prepare a concert of music to perform for you at the conclusion of the event. Students come away from this weekend re-energized and excited about making music because of the wonderful experience they have with students representing the many public and private schools of Cobb County. PAYMENT DUE BY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 REQUIREMENTS: BRASS & WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS 1. 2. 3. MAJOR SCALES: Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab. You must play the scales exactly as written (octaves, articulations, etc.). Scales must be memorized. CHROMATIC SCALE: Scale may be slurred or tongued, but it must be memorized. Required ranges are as follows, but you may play higher or lower if possible: Flute, Piccolo Low C to High F Oboe Low C to High C Sop. Clarinet Low E to High D Bass, Contra Cl. Low E to High A Bassoon Low Bb to High F All Saxophones Low C to High D French Horn Low F to High F Trumpet, Euphonium T.C. Low F# to High G Trombone, Euphonium B.C. Low E to High F Tuba Low E to High F SIGHTREADING: Students will be required to perform one or more sightreading examples as part of their audition. PERCUSSIONISTS Students are required to audition on all three instruments: Snare Drum, Keyboard Percussion, and Timpani. There will be one sight reading exercise on each percussion instrument. 1. Snare Drum – Rudiments to be played in an open-close-open rudimental presentation fashion – Long Roll,Flam Accent, Ruff, and student’s choice. 2. Keyboard Percussion – Chromatic scale, full range of instrument; major scales and arpeggios as noted below. Major Scale Requirements: Concert F, Bb, Eb, and Ab major, 2 octaves each, memorized, in the same rhythm pattern and tempo as required of middle school woodwind and brass scales/arpeggios. 3. Timpani – Tuning test requiring student to tune one time to the sight-reading exercises. Timpani auditioners should allow students to use any type of tone producer (pitch pipe, mallet instrument, etc.) for tuning. There will be a 30-second per drum time limit on the timpani tuning audition. GMEA GEORGIA ALL-STATE BAND AUDITIONS The Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Band is comprised of students from the state of Georgia who have been selected based on their performance at two rounds of auditions. The first round of All-State auditions is being held simultaneously with the District XXII Honor Band Audition (Saturday, Dec. 7). Students wishing to audition for All-State will need to register for this audition in addition to the Honor Band audition, pay an additional fee, and prepare additional audition material. Students who pass the first round of All-State auditions will advance to the Final All-State audition on January 11, 2014 in Perry, GA. Upon selection as a member of the band, students will attend the GMEA All-State Band event in Athens on February 27 – March 1, 2014. This event is an unforgettable experience for All-State Band members who will work with well known guest conductors as they prepare a concert of music to perform for you at the conclusion of the event. Students come away from this experience with lifelong memories of their experiences making music with students representing the many public and private schools of the state of Georgia. PAYMENT DUE BY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 REQUIREMENTS: All-State audition requirements are identical to the Honor Band audition requirements with the addition of a prepared piece that the students can pick up in the band room.
