Two PhD fellowships in medicinal chemistry/organic chemistry The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is pleased to announce that two PhD fellowships will be available in the Chemical Neuroscience Group from 1 October 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is 17 August 2014. Applications are invited for the three-year fellowships from applicants who hold or expect to hold a master´s degree in a field relevant to the projects. The PhD projects are within the field of rational design and synthesis of novel ligands for the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system in the central nervous system. The objective is to discover compounds, which present a truly unprecedented glutamate receptor selectivity profile and are suitable for in vivo studies. The PhD fellowships are financed by The Danish Council for Independent Research (Medical Sciences) and the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology. Required qualifications The applicant must have: • obtained a Master´s degree in a relevant subject area prior to the starting date • be able to communicate in English – both written and spoken Preferred qualifications We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry at both theoretical and practical levels. Furthermore, the candidates should have a creative mind and strong driving force to achieve novel scientific goals, independently as well as through collaborative efforts. The ideal candidates also have insight and interest in aspects of medicinal chemistry/drug design, target oriented synthesis, as well as a desire to contribute to the development of novel psychiatric therapeutics for today’s unmet medical needs. General job description Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to: • manage and carry through your research project • take PhD courses • write scientific papers and your PhD thesis • participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings • stay at an external research institution • teach and disseminate your research • teach undergraduate students in pharmaceutical sciences Key criteria for the assessment of applicants • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD programme • Relevant work experience • Publications • The grade point average achieved • Other professional activities • Language skills • The successful applicants are also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills Formal requirements The positions are available for a three-year period for applicants holding a relevant master´s degree. It is a prerequisite that the PhD candidates are enrolled as PhD students at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and the guidelines for the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The PhD fellows are expected to be affiliated to the graduate programme in pharmaceutical sciences, Drug Research Academy.
