Albert W. Dent
Graduate Student Scholarship
For minority students only
The Foundation of the American College of Healthcare Executives established this
scholarship in honor of Albert W. Dent, the first African-American Fellow of ACHE. This
financial aid program is offered to help ACHE Student Associates finance their education.
Scholarship Details
Offered annually, the Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for
minority students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate
program. Each Scholarship is worth $5,000. Between the Dent and the McGaw
scholarships, ACHE awards up to 20 scholarships each year. In providing this
scholarship, ACHE’s goal is to provide financial aid to minority students in healthcare
management graduate programs to help offset tuition costs, student loans and expenses.
Eligibility Requirements
You may apply for an Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship if you meet all of the
following criteria:





You are a Student Associate in good standing of the American College of Healthcare
Executives.
You are a minority student who is enrolled in full-time study for the upcoming fall
term, which is your final year of classroom work in a healthcare management
graduate program*, and have a graduation date between Fall 2012 and Spring 2013.
If you have a residency as part of your program and the upcoming fall term will be
your second year of study, you may apply for a scholarship. (Example: your final day
of class will be in May 2013 and your final day of your residency will be in May
2014.) If you have already completed your classroom work and are in the residency
part of your program, you are not eligible to apply.
You can demonstrate financial need.
You are a U.S. or Canadian citizen.
You have not been a previous recipient of this scholarship or the Foster G. McGaw
Graduate Student Scholarship.
Please note: The Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is only available to minority
students, based on the definition of minority created by the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission.
* MHA, MPH, MBA in Healthcare Administration or similar. PhD students are not eligible to
apply.

Foster G. McGaw
Graduate Student Scholarship
The Foundation of the American College of Healthcare Executives established this
scholarship in honor of Foster G. McGaw, the founder of the American Hospital Supply
Corporation. This financial aid program is offered to help ACHE Student Associates finance
their education.

scholarship is worth $5,000. Between the McGaw and Dent scholarships, ACHE

HIMSS Foundation will be accepting scholarship applications for 2012 from August 1st to
October 15th, 2012. Please check back on August 1, 2012 for the official on line application.
The HIMSS Foundation annually awards scholarships to HIMSS student members who have
achieved academic excellence and have the potential to be future leaders in the healthcare
information and management systems industry.
Ten scholarships will be awarded this year to the student(s) deemed most deserving as
determined by the HIMSS Foundation Scholarship Review Board.

Richard P. Covert, PhD, LFHIMSS Scholarship for Management Systems
Central and Northern Florida HIMSS Chapter Scholarship
Sponsored by the Central and Northern Florida Chapter of HIMSS
The Central and Northern Florida Chapter is pleased to announce a new scholarship for a student
in the healthcare information and management systems field. Established and funded by the
Central and Northern Florida HIMSS Chapter, this scholarship is awarded to a HIMSS student
member who exhibits academic excellence and future leadership potential in the healthcare
information and management systems industry. Student member of the Central and Northern
Florida Chapter are all encouraged to apply for the scholarship.
The amount of the scholarship is $5,000 and is given annually. In addition, the winner will also
receive an all-expense paid trip to the Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition. (Some
restrictions may apply.)
Criteria:
Applicants for the Central and Northern Florida HIMSS Chapter Scholarship must fulfill these
minimum requirements:




The applicant must be a member in good standing of National HIMSS and the Central
and Northern Florida Chapter and will serve on a committee during the term of the
scholarship.
The primary occupation of the applicant at the time the scholarship is awarded must be
that of student in an accredited undergraduate, Masters or PhD program related to the
healthcare information management systems field. The specific degree program is not a
critical factor, although it is expected that programs similar to those in industrial
engineering, operations research, healthcare informatics, computer science and
information systems, mathematics, and quantitative programs in business administration
and hospital administration will predominate.
Undergraduate applicants must be at least a first-term junior when the scholarship is
awarded.
Previous Foundation Scholarship winners are ineligible.

Stuart A. Wesbury, Jr.
Postgraduate Fellowship
A program to complement graduate studies in healthcare or association management
Since its founding in 1933, the American College of Healthcare Executives has worked toward its
goal of improving the health status of society by advancing healthcare leadership and management
excellence. Today, ACHE is the premier professional society or healthcare executives, with a
continually growing membership base now numbering 30,000 individuals. ACHE is dedicated to
helping healthcare executives realize their career potential through professional development
programs and services; a prestigious credentialing program; unparalleled educational offerings;
award-winning books and journals on healthcare management; groundbreaking research; and public
policy initiatives.
The Stuart A. Wesbury, Jr. Postgraduate Fellowship was established in 1991 to further postgraduate
education in healthcare and professional society management. The fellowship was named in honor of
Stuart A. Wesbury, Jr., PhD, FACHE, ACHE president from 1979 to 1991.
Fellowship Purpose
ACHE’s fellowship program has four primary purposes:

To provide in-depth exposure to a broad range of association management issues and one-onone interaction with senior-level executives.

To allow the fellow to assume responsibility for selected administrative tasks.

To develop the fellow’s decision-making and problem-solving skills as they relate to complex
organizational activities.

To provide the fellow with an opportunity to explore particular issues of importance to ACHE
and its affiliates.
Fellowship Program
The one-year fellowship program will provide an opportunity for the fellow to work in all major ACHE
divisions, including Communications and Marketing, Professional Development, Executive Office,
Finance and Administration, Health Administration Press, Management Information Systems,
Regional Services and Member Services. The fellowship program’s content will be developed around
the fellow’s special interests as well as in response to organizational needs. Attendance at ACHE
seminars and conferences and key association meetings is part of the fellowship. ACHE President
and Chief Executive Officer Thomas C. Dolan, PhD, FACHE, CAE, and Executive Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, will serve as co-preceptors for the fellowship
program.
Eligible Candidates
You are eligible to apply for ACHE’s fellowship if you meet the following criteria:

You have earned, before the fellowship begins, a graduate degree in healthcare or association
management from a college or university that is accredited by the regional accrediting
association in the United States approved by the U.S. Department of Education or that holds
membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
How to Apply
The Stuart A. Wesbury, Jr. Postgraduate Fellowship is offered annually. Applications must include:

A short statement of interest (maximum 1,000 words)

A current curriculum vitae

Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts

Letters of recommendation from the applicant’s university program director as well as two
professional colleagues
Applications will be accepted beginning October 1, 2011, and must be postmarked no later than
December 1, 2011. Finalists will be invited to ACHE for personal interviews.
The fellowship program will begin in May/June 2012; however, the start date is negotiable. The
fellow will receive a salary of $49,422, with an excellent benefits package. A moving allowance will
be provided.

beyond. To support tomorrow's healthcare management leadership, AUPHA provides student financial
support and post-graduate learning opportunites.

Corris Boyd Scholars Program
This program was established in 2006 in honor of Corris Boyd, Senior Executive Vice President of
Supplier Diversity for HealthTrust Purchasing Group who passed away on December 19, 2005. He was
also part of the leadership team of the HCA Pacific Group, an assistant vice president with HCA
Corporate in Nashville, a commissioned ROTC officer, and served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
The Corris Boyd Scholars Program will provide two $40,000 scholarships to deserving minority students
entering Master's Degree programs at AUPHA full member, CAHME accredited programs.
The Foster G. McGaw Scholarship
The Foster G. McGaw Scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate and graduate students
in health administration. Scholarship funds are awarded each year to all AUPHA full graduate
programs. The faculty within these programs disperse these monies at their discretion to students
most deserving of recognition.
More than 900 scholarships have been awarded since the program was established in 1975. The
scholarship was endowed by Foster G. McGaw, founder of the American Hospital Supply Corporation.
McGaw recognized the importance of health administration education and AUPHA’s contribution to the
field.

Bugbee Falk Book Award
In recognition of the lifetime accomplishments of George Bugbee and Isidore S. Falk, M.D., AUPHA
annually bestows the Bugbee Falk Book Award to a group of outstanding students in our member
programs. The book award is an innovative way to support tomorrow’s leaders by providing them with
works by respected authors in the field. The books are intended to launch the student’s professional
library.
Eligibility:
Students at programs that are members of AUPHA are eligible to receive this award. AUPHA selects
several programs each year to receive the award. Actual student recipients are selected by the
program. Students from seven programs receive the award each year.

David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarship
The objective of the David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarship Program is to increase the number
and quality of individuals trained in healthcare policy at the state and federal level by awarding
deserving health policy students financial support to further their education.
This scholarship recognizes student excellence and achievement based upon the student’s record and
recommendations from faculty and colleagues. Ten $5,000 scholarships will be offered to students
who demonstrate their potential to succeed in health policy at the state or federal level upon
graduation from their master’s health administration degree program.
