Coffman Memorial Union, on the Minneapolis campus offers a place to relax between classes, grab a quick bite to eat, take a break in Goldy’s game room, see a (free) movie, or browse the University bookstore. A lovely park and a series of paths alongside the Mississippi River are on the south side of Coffman. On the north side, Coffman is connected by pedestrian bridges to the Northrop Mall and Plaza, a spot for noon summer concerts. The University Recreation Center houses two fitness centers, 14 handball and racquetball courts, five international squash courts, two gymnasiums, steam room, sauna, and locker rooms. The adjacent Aquatic Center is also open to students, staff, and faculty, and lap swimming is offered seven days a week. The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, designed by Frank Gehry, was completed in 1993 and is an active center for displaying artwork and for live performances, lectures and other cultural activities. When you are at the museum, pick up a Public Art on Campus brochure at the information desk and as you walk around campus keep your eyes open for the outdoor sculptures. The Horticultural Science Display and Trial Garden at the corner of Gortner Avenue and Folwell Street begins to bloom in late May. Across the street, Mullins Woodlands offers paths through native Minnesota trees and wildflowers. The Gabbert Raptor Center, on the St. Paul campus, is a place to see eagles and other birds of prey up close. Visits and tours are available during the week and on Saturdays.
