Estimating tropical tree species richness Using a database of old-growth, closed-canopy tropical forest tree species abundances covering more than 657,000 trees of 11,371 species, researchers estimate that the minimum number of tropical tree species likely ranges between approximately 40,000 and 53,000, and that the Indo-Pacific region is as rich in tree species as tropical America, in contrast to continental Africa, which has fewer tree species.
