Dust Bowl Project Descriptions
Option #1: Write a Song


You are a songwriter. Your next hit is called _______________________________. It is
a song about the events and hardships of the Dust Bowl. Write an original song that has
3 stanzas and a chorus.
Design the cover of the CD case for this hit song.
Option #2: Artist Rendition



Search http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/dustbowl/photos/. Find one photograph that
“speaks to you”.
Create an original piece of art that will capture the “feelings” of this photograph.
Write a paragraph that explains how the piece of art explains this photo.
Option #3: Timeline


You must research events in America before the Dust Bowl, during the Dust Bowl and
after the Dust Bowl. You must have 5 from each section.
Include the event description, date, picture and an explanation of it significance.
Option #4: Interview


Interview a person who lived in America during the 1930s. This can be a friend, family
member, member of your church, etc.
You must either videotape the interview or supply an audio recording of the interview.
If neither of these is possible, you must have a written transcription of the interview.
Option #5: What’s the Weather?



Research significant weather events in America. You must choose an event in our
history that GREATLY impacted our way of life.
Answer WHEN, WHERE, WHAT, HOW for the event. Include pictures to accompany your
choice.
Compare how this weather event is similar and different from the Dust Bowl weather.
Option #6: Invention



What has been the single greatest invention in the world?
WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO, WHY (3 specific reasons how this invention has impacted
you).
How does the impact of this invention compare to the impact the motorized plow had
on the farmers of the Dust Bowl?
Option #7: Historical Fiction



Choose a historical fiction book from our media center.
Create something to advertise the book. It must include the Author, Title, Year Written,
a description of the event it was written about and a book review from you.
How does this historical fiction novel topic compare to the topic of the Dust Bowl (are
there more books written about the Dust Bowl or your selection?).
Option #8: I’m a Survivor


Go to http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/dustbowl/bios/.
You will compare the survival story of a Dust Bowl survivor to a survivor from another
historical event in American History. Include a description of each person and a 1
paragraph explanation of how their stories mirror each other.
Option #9: Essay

Write a 5 paragraph essay about what caused the Dust Bowl. It must contain an
introductory paragraph, conclusion paragraph. You must also have 3 well-developed
ideas to support your answer. It must be typed and double spaced.
