Michael J. Langworthy, MD, joins Southcoast Physicians Group as Chief of
Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Southcoast® Health System announced today that Michael J.
Langworthy, MD, has joined Southcoast Physicians Group as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports
Medicine.
Dr. Langworthy is an internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon who continues to lead
advisors of arthritic joint disease to the U.S. military and a number of international research entities. He
will also continue to serve as Reserve Captain and Director of Advanced Trauma Life Support in the
United States Navy. Clinically active for more than 20 years, he has extensive experience in orthopedic
trauma and reconstruction, including adult pelvis and major joint reconstruction.
In his role as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Langworthy will be working to develop and
implement a new, multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with joint disease and all forms
of arthritis, and will see patients at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.
“Southcoast is laying the groundwork for a musculoskeletal program with the aspiration of
becoming a Center of Excellence. The program will take a multi-disciplinary approach to joint disease
including all forms of arthritis. It will include pain management, sports medicine, the use of ultrasound,
optimizing the use of anti-inflammatory medications, orthopedic and rheumatologic experts and
occupational and physical therapy,” Dr. Langworthy said.
“When a patient is no longer able to take part in the activities of daily living due to joint
degeneration, they may be enrolled in a ‘Joint Camp’ where they may undergo joint replacement surgery
under the watchful eye of physicians and nursing staff with special expertise in joint issues. They will also
have the opportunity to meet peers who are experiencing the same issues for camaraderie and support.
The goal will be to use the right modality, whether it be medical or surgical to manage each patient’s
condition and restore them to the highest quality of life possible.”
Prior to joining Southcoast, Dr. Langworthy functioned as Chairman of Surgery and Co-director
of Bronson Battle Creek Health System’s “Joint Restoration Center” in Battle Creek, Mich. He has also
received numerous awards and honors including recognition as one of the “Top 100 Health Professionals
of 2013” by International Biographical Centre, in Cambridge, England.
Dr. Langworthy received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical
School in Ann Arbor, Mich. He completed his general surgery internship and surgical residency at the
Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., followed by his fellowship in adult pelvis and major
joint reconstruction at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, Calif.
Dr. Langworthy is board certified in orthopedic surgery, and is a member of the International
Cartilage Research Society, American Hip and Knee Society, Orthopedic Trauma Association, and a
Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
In addition to his many posts and achievements, Dr. Langworthy enjoys being physically active
and has met several sport challenges, including the 1.5 mile swim “Escape from Alcatraz – Swim with the
Centurions” in 2007. Dr. Langworthy lives in Mattapoisett with his wife Alissar.
