A daily snapshot of what's happening in the life sciences community Wednesday November 6, 2013 LifeSciences BC Announcements LifeSciences BC Welcomes Two New Sponsors! LifeSciences British Columbia relies greatly on the support of our sponsors – without which, we would not be able to undertake many of our industry building initiatives. Silver Sponsor – STEMCELL Technologies inc. Bronze Sponsor – Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc. We are proud to feature the following companies as organizational sponsors on our webpage LifeSciences BC welcomes ESSA Pharma Inc. as a new member! ESSA Pharma Inc. is a private company focused on the development of small molecule drugs for the treatment of prostate cancer. The technology on which ESSA has been formed (the “NTD Technology”), while discovered by Drs. Sadar and Andersen, was the joint property of the British Columbia Cancer Agency and the University of British Columbia. ESSA has licensed the NTD Technology from BCCA and UBC, filed additional IP and raised seed funding. For information on ESSA, as well as our other members, please visit our members page here Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada 2014 Secondary school students interested in science careers are invited to participate in Sanfi BioGENEius Challenge Canada 2014. Students must submit a biotechnology research proposal by Monday, November 18 to Rosine Hage-Moussa (contact info below), and will then have an opportunity to be paired with a mentor in a lab to carry out their research. Students must present their research at the regional competition in April for a spot at the national competition in May. The top two students at the national competition will travel to San Diego during the BIO International Convention to participate in International BioGENEius. The 2013 competition saw Selin Jessa, a former student at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam (now studying at McGill), achieve the highest standing in the history of participants from British Columbia by placing 4th at the international competition in Chicago. If you’re interested in becoming a mentor for the regional competition, please contact Rosine Hage-Moussa (contact info below). Mentors must have at least a Bachelor of Science, access to lab space, basic lab materials and supplies and be willing to commit to mentoring from now until the regional competition in April. Mentorship involves providing guidance to the student, ensuring safety in the lab at all times and signing off on the student’s lab notebook. Mentoring is voluntary; however, in recognition of the time and expertise donated, mentors are offered a complimentary ticket to the annual LifeSciences British Columbia Awards Dinner, where LifeSciences BC will announce the winners of the B.C. regional competition. Rosine Hage-Moussa can be contacted at 604.602.5228 or rhage@lifesciencesbc.ca More information about the competition can be found by visiting www.sanofibiogeneiuschallenge.ca Get involved today!
