Chapter 14 introduces us to the
concept of mental illness and a
variety of psychological
disorders. First, we learn about
the symptoms and causes of
anxiety disorders including:
One study found that 48% of Americans
panic disorder, obsessive
reported experiencing a psychological
compulsive disorder, and post
traumatic stress disorder. Then
disorder at sometime in their life.
we will discuss mood disorders
such as, major depressive and
bipolar disorders. Several personality disorders including antisocial personality disorder will also
be covered. The fascinating symptoms of dissociative identity disorder is another topic to be
examined in this chapter.
Chapter 14 will also cover schizophrenia, which is one of the most severe psychological
disorders. Schizophrenia affects a person's perceptions, thoughts and behaviors. We will discuss
the subtypes of schizophrenia, theories that attempt to explain its causes, and various treatment
approaches.

Describe the symptoms of paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder,
and borderline personality disorder.
Recognize the symptoms of dissociative amnesia, fugues and dissociative identity
disorder.
Discuss theories on the development of dissociative identity disorder.
Identify the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Describe the types of schizophrenia.
Discuss the factors that may explain the cause of schizophrenia.
