Students complain about noise in library, particularly with large groups ----- a quiet study area (located in math tutoring lab off hours) has been designated (will begin shortly, waiting for elevator security issue to be resolved)----the SUNY Canton College 2 Library is working with Residence Life to address ‘pledging’ concerns (Greek organizations will not ‘pledge’ in the library) 2. Reviewed committee charge and responsibilities 8. Discussion of Student Opinion Survey (SOS) results: a. Judy S. gave background on SOS: i. Began in 1985; given every three years, provides longitudinal look at how your school is doing, results are password protected – for use on campus ii. 2006 response rate 66%; this year 2009 74% of a sample (SUNY tells us how to draw our sample, faculty proctor during one week period, SUNY gives schools number of students needed to sample, based on administration (web administration requires over sampling) iii. Mostly freshmen, this is what our demographics are iv. ACT does analysis, gives us significant difference v. Definitions: –state ops (all); Tech sector (peer groups) 9. Discussion of student affairs survey conducted last year (Residence Life, Athletics, UP). Need to relook at results of survey; perhaps focus groups to explore more fully. Do results from this survey overlap SOS results? 10. Next steps: a. Contact Diane Para for student affairs survey results. b. Compare these results to SOS results. c. Decide on areas that need to be addressed; areas in need of improvement d. Do a detailed survey of residence halls conditions and programming spring 2010; getting more specific may help (each RA has 4 programs per semester; there are ~40 RAs; highest tripling rate was fall 2006, not as many triples in 2008) 2. Item: Sense of Belonging-Student input in college polices & plans i. Contact Person: Many areas; one area is Tech Fee (Molly Mott) ii. Action plan: Educated students on tech fee and what it buys- revise Information Services page, attend residence town hall meeting; how to reach out to commuters? Thursday 11-12-09 Present: Shawn Miller, Sue Law, Patty Todd, Linda Pellett Minutes from last week correction: add Judy Singh as present on 11-05-09 (done) For next time look at the Oneonta Assessment Plan (some members could not access thru the link) Review of SOS results: Health and Wellness -Personnel safety and security: Thoughts are that the stabbing carried over into the spring semester; there is a Campus Safety Committee (Patti Todd) -Sexual assault and prevention: mostly Counseling and University Police do programming further discussion; 21/27campuses have a dedicated Health Education; this semester programs were cancelled due to the amount of business in the Health Center (H1N1). The best combination for the Health Center was when it was located in Dana hall with Counseling (separated in 2002) Health Center does its own survey via email, surveys after first visit, 4000 visits per year, offers Visa Card for filling out, last one sent to Molly Health Area Issues SUNY Canton College 5 -not handicapped accessible -small space and too crowded -problems with confidentiality Mike has been made aware of problems with physical space Health Center will seek AAAHC accreditation Student Orientation (Lashwanda) Recreation and Intramural programs (Keith Sullivan): limited due to facilities Student Newspaper (not one in 2009): electronic "Roos News" started in Sept 2009 (Mike Perry). Encouraging students to go to electronic news paper for posting Sense of Student Belonging; student input college policy/plan; problem SCA name with recognition ? Change name? Where are the student positions on campus further discussion? Several vacancies were mentioned for students on campus wide committees- do the students know that they exist? Two committee members sited good attendance on their respective committee where students were directly chosen by them. Can we get a list of committees where students can serve? Could FYE address committee opportunities with incoming freshmen since one of the goals of FYE is a Sense of Belonging? Lastly SORRY these are so late wrote!! Continued discussion of SOS results, shared feedback from PTK officers: a. Re: need for quiet study areas- reiterated that the ‘Silent Zone’ has been created in the Library (4 pm-midnight) SUNY Canton College 6 b. Need for additional science tutoring hours during midterm and finals week to accommodate non-traditional schedules and more opportunities to study c. Re: the question on instructor availability: students are most likely referring to office hours and difficulty contacting adjuncts d. Re: sense of belonging issue: this likely relates more to fitting into social groups, a personal issue e. Re: faculty respect for students (low rating): students sense that faculty themselves do not respect SUNY Canton, have experienced faculty sharing disparaging remarks
