Title
High Fidelity Video Based MRI Tutorials in Under 10
Abstract of Proposed Research Plan (300 words)
Adult learners prefer focused, accessible learning at point-of-care. Video is an appealing medium for
content delivery and is effective for delivering instruction in skills training and decision-making in
addition to medical knowledge. The training experience in body MRI is widely variable across residencies
and fellowships based on case mix, size of program, and proximity to tertiary care pediatrics. We showed
through our pilot project, “Ultrasound Tutorials in under 10”, that our fellows’ ultrasound skills were also
widely variable at baseline and that after they completed the interactive under 10 minute video-based US
tutorials, skills and confidence increased significantly and had increased further on a six month test of
learning retention. In addition, this same intervention with residents at the University of Addis Ababa in
Ethiopia showed significant improvement in skills despite their greater pretest experience with u
ltrasound. We plan to create video-based tutorials in MRI using a similar format to the pilot project, to
include validation testing. Experts in pediatric body MRI from our institution together with a panel of 5
experts from multiple institutions will create content and script the micro learning tutorials for the top ten
MRI studies. The format will integrate 3-plane anatomy, unique pathologies, sequence selection, and the
rendering of a clinically relevant report, with additional menu items to include patient preparation,
positioning, coils, and safety. High Fidelity Video Based MRI Tutorials in Under 10 will be available online
anytime anywhere and serve as a comprehensive adjunct to pediatric MR training, with a potential future
role in the Milestones project. The addition of a multi-institutional expert panel adds full breadth to this
interactive educational experience.

Resources and Environment:
The radiology department at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia conducts 18,186 MRI examinations
per year, 12,863 in neuroradiology and 5,323 in body radiology. We have state of the art equipment
including 4 3T and 3 1.5T With 37 staff radiologists in the coming academic year, we have the complete
scope of expertise in complex and routine pediatric body MR imaging to support high quality in this
project. CHOP’s Learning Services Department is led by Don Yanaitis, who has a strong commitment to the
pediatric radiology education initiative as evidenced by his recent work with the ultrasound project. Don
has agreed to dedicate 350 hours of time for instructional design and execution of this project.
