Students will demonstrate awareness as well as understanding of interrelated sociocultural, historical, political and economic forces shaping gendered experiences in global women’s narratives, examining the impact of women’s dis/empowerment based on feminist literary theory. Assessment Results Active Learning Component: Group Wiki Study Groups will analyze one of the theoretical articles provided in the Supplementary Reading list, record their critical analysis in the Wiki, and lead a class discussion for 20-30 minutes. The Wiki requires students to present a synopsis of the article; identify the text’s main question/thesis; discuss how the author develops her/his thesis; and outline the different methodological and theoretical approaches taken in the article. Situating the text within the broad field of “global women’s literature,” students are required to draw connections to the novels/short stories discussed in class: In what ways is the theoretical article helpful in analyzing the local and global dimensions of women’s literature? Evaluation Process: Scale of 100 Minimum Criteria for Success: 75% of students will score 80 points or higher on the rubric. Sample: All students will be assessed. Assessment Activity/Artifact: Course Learning Outcome Students will demonstrate ability to develop a multi-perspective analysis of gendered experiences in a given literary text against local, global, international, and intercultural backgrounds and across linguistic boundaries. Assessment Results Final Take-home Exam Artifact requires students to analyze and evaluate an aspect of a set novel of their choice based on feminist literary theory, developing a unique argument that shows evidence of critical thinking. Assessment Activity/Artifact: Course Learning Outcome Students will be able to demonstrate willingness to engage in local, global, international, and intercultural problem solving by addressing the narrative experiences of gender inequalities within a local and global framework. Assessment Results Three Critical Response Papers: Artifact requires students to write three short essays on a novel/short story in which they compare and contrast the texts’ representations of one or more of the following key issues: status of women/gendered minorities in society; gender inequalities; human rights and social justice. Based on class discussions and class lectures about the political, economic, and cultural framework, students will formulate a central interpretive idea about the text. The essay examines the ways in which the text addresses and problematizes key gender issues, identifying possible course of actions and potential obstacles for the protagonist/ characters.
