SVS Minority Medical Student Travel Scholarship Sponsored by the SVS Diversity and Inclusion Committee Application Deadline: February 24, 2012 The primary purpose of the SVS Minority Medical Student Travel Scholarship is to provide the recipient with an opportunity to attend the 2012 Vascular Annual Meeting, held June 7-9 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, National Harbor, MD, and to enhance the minority medical student’s professional network within the vascular surgery specialty. During the Vascular Annual Meeting, students will be able to attend scientific sessions and network with leaders in the field. SVS will provide educational programming designed exclusively for students. Scholarship recipients also will have the opportunity to participate in open and endovascular simulation training, a surgical skills competition, and a vascular surgery jeopardy competition. Mentoring Program [link to mentoring program description] In an effort to further establish meaningful and productive relationships between the scholarship recipients and minority vascular surgeon SVS members, recipients will be assigned a one-on-one mentor. Mentors will work with the recipient prior to the Vascular Annual Meeting and throughout the following year. A networking event with the SVS Diversity and Inclusion Committee and assigned mentors will be held at the 2012 Vascular Annual Meeting. The SVS grants a maximum of ten scholarships per year. Financial Support The SVS Minority Medical Student Travel Scholarship, in the amount of US $1,000, is to be used toward the cost of registration, travel, housing, and subsistence during the period of the Vascular Annual Meeting and other local or regional vascular meetings. Please note scholarship recipients will need to confirm their attendance at the Vascular Annual Meeting Student Scholarship Program each day in order to receive the travel funds. Funds will be reimbursed directly to the applicant in July 2012. Eligibility for Selection To be eligible to apply for the travel scholarship, you must meet the following criteria: Be a medical student currently enrolled in medical school in the United States or Canada Be part of a minority group based on ethnicity/race Application Procedure An application [link to form] must be submitted via email to the SVS Diversity and Inclusion Committee (email: studentresident@vascularsociety.org). The Committee will determine the finalists. Decisions regarding the scholarship will be emailed to applicants by early April. Report to Committee A report covering the experience should be prepared and forwarded to the SVS Diversity and Inclusion Committee within three months of completion after attending the Vascular Annual Meeting. The report should be one to two double-spaced typewritten pages and should summarize activities during the Vascular Annual Meeting. Although factual statements of activities should be included, recipients are encouraged to place these within an overall context of the impact on professional and personal development. Minority Medical Student Mentoring Program The purpose of the minority medical student mentoring program is to attract and retain diverse medical students to the vascular surgery specialty.
