FRONT COVER The Marriage of and Saturday, the First of March Two thousand twelve One o’clock in the afternoon Old St. Patrick’s Church Chicago, Illinois PAGE ONE (inside right) History of Old St. Patrick’s Church Since its founding by Irish immigrants on Easter morning in 1846, Old St. Patrick’s has been interwoven in the life and history of the City of Chicago. Founded in 1846 as the first English-speaking parish in the city, the current church building was designed in a Romanesque style by two of Chicago’s earliest practicing architects, Augustus Bauer and Asher Carter. The cornerstone was laid on May 23, 1853 and the building was dedicated on Christmas Day, 1856. Old St. Patrick’s is one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Its survival makes it the oldest public building and the oldest church in the City of Chicago. Perhaps the most treasured pieces of art found at Old St. Patrick’s Church are the fifteen magnificent stained glass windows designed, constructed and personally installed by Thomas O’Shaughnessy between 1912 and 1922. The windows contain motifs inspired by the Celtic art exhibit at the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the Book of Kells, a hand illuminated manuscript produced by Irish monks in the seventh century. The final triptych windows, done in an art nouveau style and installed in the eastern façade of the church, are the “Faith, Hope and Charity” windows, also known as the Terrence MacSwiney Memorial Triptych. In 1977, Old St. Patrick’s was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. PAGE TWO AND THREE (left and right) The Wedding Party Celebrant Father Thomas J. Liturgy of the Word First reading: A Reading from the Book of Genesis 2:18-24 Katie-------------------------, sister of the Groom The Lord God said: “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” So the Lord God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds in the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to be a suitable partner for the man. So the Lord God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The Lord God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called woman, for out of her man this one has been taken.” This is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body. But I shall show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in human or angelic tongues, but I do not have love, I am a resounding gong or clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophesy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have faith so as to move all mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not gain love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, is not pompous, is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrong doing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Reader: All: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Gospel Acclamation (Please stand) Gospel: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 2:1-11 (Before the Gospel) Priest: All: Priest: All: The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel. Glory to you, O Lord. (We make the sign of the Cross on our forehead, lips and heart to remind us that the Gospel is in our minds, in our spoken words, and in our hearts.) There was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no more wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what is that to me and you? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone waterjars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the waiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servants who had drawn the water knew) the headwaiter called to the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine till now.” (After the Gospel) Priest: All: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (Please be seated.) Homily Father Thomas J.
