Story MapCharacter: Jake and Danielle, brother and sister
Setting: Mount Remington, winter, present times
Problem: Their family was in a car accident and their parents were
injured. Jake and Danielle need to climb the mountain to the weather
station.
Events:
1) They do not have the proper tools to climb. They need to
improvise.
2) They use their father’s tools. The hammer serves as an ice ax, the
screwdriver is a piton, and the leash in the carabineer.
3) They finally reach the top, but realize they are on a false summit.
Solution: They see the weather station and climb over to it. When the
knock, there is no answer but they hear jazz music. Jake uses the
hammer to knock on the door. Two men finally answer.
Reflection: I liked this story because…
English1) Complex Sentences- contains at least one subordinate clause
(cannot stand by itself) and one independent clause (can stand alone
as a sentence)
-includes subordinate conjunction:
after, although, as, because, before, if, since, unless, until, when,
whenever, while
ex) You should not try to climb a mountain until you have
prepared properly.
2) Fragments- do not express a complete thought
ex) Because the weather can change quickly
3) Run-on- expresses too many thoughts without correct punctuation
ex) Meteorologists predict the weather daily, they make longrange forecasts, they provide people with information.
