The Lambert Initiative of Cannabinoid Therapeutics is a newly established research hub that will explore the potential of compounds derived from the cannabis plant (cannabinoids) in treating a range of diseases. Our approach will involve medicinal chemistry, cellular and preclinical research, early human testing and clinical trials in patients. The Lambert Initiative will also translate research outcomes into practice by providing training to health professionals and engaging consumer organisations and media to educate the public and transform current policy. Our overall aim is to optimise and introduce safe and effective cannabinoid therapeutics into mainstream medicine in Australia and beyond. We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) to work on a major research priority of The Lambert Initiative of Cannabinoid Therapeutics - assessing whether cannabinoids are effective in the treatment of paediatric epilepsy. Preclinically we will achieve this using genetic mouse models of Dravet syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. It is therefore essential that the successful candidate have experience in conducting studies using rodent models of epilepsy including measurement of epilepsy related EEGs and/or the quantification of seizure behaviour. In addition to conducting the research you will contribute to presentations and research publications and help build research capacity by assisting in sourcing and securing further funding. To succeed in securing this role you will have: Essential: a PhD or equivalent degree and experience in a relevant area a history of research evidenced by peer reviewed publications demonstrated knowledge of research governance and regulation, including ethics experience in conducting studies using rodent models of epilepsy including the measurement of epilepsy related EEGs in rodents and/or the quantification of seizure behaviour. experience in contributing to writing and submitting grant applications (essential at Level B) excellent oral and written communication skills excellent organisational skills. Desirable: experience in pharmacological studies assessing the efficacy of novel anticonvulsant agents experience in breeding and maintaining rodents that provide genetic models of epilepsy in humans experience in automated biotelemetry systems for assessing epileptiform activity in rodents experience in patch-clamping or related electrophysiological techniques experience with higher degree research student supervision or co-supervision.
