THE DUPLIN COUNTY EDUCATION FOUNDATION L.S. GUY AND DR. TOMMY BENSON MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarship ID#__________ I. General Information The L.S. Guy Merit Scholarship and the Dr. Tommy Benson Merit Scholarship will be awarded annually to students in each of the five high schools in Duplin County based on merit. The students will be able to attend any institution of higher education to pursue their career goal. This scholarship is to help insure that a student who has excelled academically and who plans to attend college is provided recognition for their achievement. The scholarships will be one time only for a value of $500. Once a student has been selected for the scholarship, the student must complete the Scholarship Verification Form and send a copy to the Education Foundation and the attending college. Upon receipt of notification of enrollment by the college or university, the payment will be made directly to the college or university. Payment may be made prior to enrollment only if the college or university requires it. II. Application Procedures: 1. Any high school senior who meets the criteria may make application. Applications for the L. S. Guy Merit Scholarship and Dr. Tommy Benson Merit Scholarship may be obtained from the local high school principal, school counselor or online at www.duplinschools.net. 2. Completed applications should be submitted to school principals or counselors who will forward them to the Director of Support Services at the Board of Education by the announced deadline. 3. An applicant must have an SAT score of 950 or an ACT of 20 and at least a 90 average. 4. Rank in class, overall grades, participation in extra-curricular activities and community service will be a consideration. 5. Two letters of recommendation must accompany the application when it is submitted. A relative may not submit a letter of recommendation. a. b. Four candidates’ applications from each high school will be recommended by the Local School Scholarship Committee to the Duplin County Education Foundation Scholarship Committee. 2. The Duplin County Education Foundation Scholarship Committee will make the final determination of scholarship awards. One scholarship recipient will receive the L.S. Guy Merit Scholarship and one recipient will receive the Dr. Tommy Benson Merit Scholarship at each of the five county high schools. 3. The Duplin County Education Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to conduct personal interviews if needed to come to a final decision regarding awards. 4. Two scholarships (one Guy and one Benson) will be awarded in each high school. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the M. Austin Carter Academic Awards Celebrations.
