Raggedy Ann and Andy SUBJECT: 2nd Grade Math TEACHERS: Andrea Baker STANDARD: 2.NBT.5 OBJECTIVE (EXPLICIT): TSW subtract numbers using Cuisenaire Rods. EVIDENCE OF MASTERY (MEASURABLE): Rubric SUB-OBJECTIVES, SWBAT (SEQUENCED FROM BASIC TO COMPLEX): KEY VOCABULARY: MATERIALS: subtraction Cuisenaire Rods difference word problems break apart centimeter grid paper crayons BEFORE ENGAGE (MAKE CONTENT AND LEARNING RELEVANT TO REAL LIFE AND CONNECT TO STUDENT INTEREST) TEACHER WILL: Ask the question, “How do you subtract to find a missing number?” “What are the manipulatives you can use to subtract?” STUDENT WILL: Answer teacher question. TEACHER WILL: Pose the following problem for students to solve. “Raggedy Ann and her brother Andy have a collection of stamps. In their collection they have a total of 24 stamps. Andy’s stamp book has 16 stamps in it. How many stamps are in Raggedy Ann’s stamp book?” STUDENT WILL: Listen to word problem. TEACHER WILL: Model the way to use Cuisenaire Rods to subtract using a break apart method. Tell students what each rod represents. Orange = 10, Blue = 9, Brown = 8, Black = 7, Green = 6, Yellow = 5, Purple = 4, Lime = 3, Red = 2, White = 1 (Have this list posted somewhere in your classroom for students to refer to during Math class). Using the grid paper we need to show our whole. Ask students what the whole is in our word problem. (24) Now we STUDENT WILL: Give ways to solve the problem. STUDENT WILL: Volunteer to show the numbers using the base ten blocks. can cover 24 squares using our Cuisenaire Rods. Have a student come to the front of the room and place the rods on the centimeter grid paper. (2 orange, 1 purple). STUDENT WILL: Students answer teacher question. Volunteer to place the Cuisenaire Rods. TEACHER WILL: Ask the question, “How would we solve this problem to find out the STUDENT WILL: Answer teacher question. number of stamps that Raggedy Ann has?” Students should answer, “Subtract the stamps that Andy has from the total number of stamps.” TEACHER WILL: Have a student volunteer come to front and place the amount of stamps the Andy has under the whole. (1 orange, 1 green). STUDENT WILL: Volunteer to place the rods. TEACHER WILL: Ask the question, “Looking at what we have, can we solve our STUDENT WILL: Answer teacher question. problem?” Students should say, “Yes cover Volunteer to place rods. the remaining squares with a rod to find your answer.” Have student place the correct rods to solve problem.(8 stamps) CO-TEACHING STRATEGY IF APPLICABLE DURING TEACHER WILL: Explain to students that they now will solve word problems using the same strategy. Tell students they will use their crayons to color in their grip paper to illustrate each problem they solved. TEACHER WILL: Pass out the grid paper, Cuisenaire Rods, and word problem sheet. (Link for word problem sheet http://www.k5mathteachingresources.com/supportfiles/2ndgrade2stepwordproblems.pdf) TEACHER WILL: Ask the following questions: “What is another way to solve this problem?” “Can you work backwards to solve?” STUDENT WILL: Solve the word problems using Cuisenaire Rods. STUDENT WILL: Answer teacher questions. “Explain your process to another group.” AFTER CO-TEACHING STRATEGY IF APPLICABLE TEACHER WILL: Ask for student volunteers to share their mathematical findings. STUDENT WILL: Share mathematical thinking. CO-TEACHING STRATEGY IF APPLICABLE Centimeter Grid Paper
