Emily Machado Professor Reilly EDUC 359- Introduction to English Language Learning 29 November 2015 Taralyn SIOP Lesson Reflection 1. The objectives of the lesson were: 1) Students will be able to write the differences between rational and irrational numbers and 2) Students will be able to identify and distinguish rational and rational numbers. I feel like we did achieve our objectives in our lesson with Taralyn. By using the chain links, number lines, T-charts, and timed game in our lesson, we could tell that Taralyn understood the differences and could identify rational and irrational numbers. Taralyn also told us why she understood which numbers were rational, and which numbers were irrational since she understood the definitions of each and applied them to different problems. 2. Yes. We tapped into Taralyn’s prior knowledge since she was aware of radicals (which tied into our lesson a little bit). By showing a video about a girl being irrational, we gave Taralyn the material to create her own definition of the word irrational. I believe that the vocabulary was challenging, but Taralyn understood and comprehended it extremely well. 3. After a few games and practice problems, I noticed that Taralyn truly understood the lesson, and it may have gotten to easy for her towards the end. I feel like all parts of the lesson worked well in having our student truly understand the content. Adjustments I would make to this lesson would be to get rid of some of the practice games we had Taralyn do on the white board and include harder problems for her to complete. For example, we could briefly go into a new topic having to do with rationals such as squares and perfect squares. 4. If we were to repeat this lesson with an ELL student of the same age, we would have to truly make sure that the student understands what the words “rational” and “irrational” mean, and then explain them in math terms. This lesson would be well suited for an ELL student, as it is simply an introduction to rational and irrational numbers and it includes mostly definitions and distinguishing between the two.
