ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING
OVERVIEW
Nursing’s foundation consists of compassionate nursing care and exemplifies current standards of practice and
current scientific /technological knowledge. Nursing involves holistic care that is concerned with improving the
quality of life, psychosocial needs, promoting, maintaining, and restoring health or a peaceful dignified death. This
is accomplished by collaborating with individuals, families, groups, communities and other healthcare team
members. Nursing is a rational activity that encompasses the nursing process, problem solving, clinical decisionmaking, critical thinking, standards and ethics to find therapeutic, safe, accurate, interventions that support health
promotion, restoration, maintenance and reduce healthcare risks and complications. These therapeutic nursing
interventions are planned and informed actions that move individuals, families, groups and communities toward
achievement of expected outcomes. The nurse manages care by using factors of caring, compassion, the nursing
process, communication, ethical principles, scientific principles, standards of care, critical thinking, accountability,
teaching and learning activities, and healthcare technology. Nursing manages healthcare resources efficiently and
effectively through responsible management of nursing care and through collaboration with other health care team
members.
The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program is a 70 semester hour program that offers a bridge option for
licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The curriculum is designed to prepare highly educated, technically competent, and
caring individuals who are prepared to practice professional nursing in a variety of healthcare settings. Students
are required to make a minimum grade of (C) in all courses each term for progression.
Program graduates who meet graduation requirements are eligible to apply to the Georgia Board of Nursing to
write the national licensure examination (NCLEX) to become registered nurses (RNs). The faculty believes
Associate Degree Nursing Education prepares students for entry into professional nursing practice and the ability to
provide care in a variety of settings. This education provides a foundation for continued learning in formal and
informal settings. Graduates are eligible to apply for advanced nursing programs in neighboring university systems. The ADN
curriculum has been accepted by both Columbus State University and Troy University RN - BSN Bridge Program for advanced
degrees.

COMPETITIVE ADMISSION
Admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program is competitive and the number of students
admitted is directly related to clinical space availability. After meeting the admission requirements,
applicants are ranked ordered using a point system. Applicant’s points are derived from GPA, Compass
scores, and the Pre-NLN test score.
Competitive admission criteria
Must have presented official documentation of an earned high school diploma or official GED scores to the
Admissions Office
1)
Be at least 18 years old.
2)
No provisional and/or special admission students considered for the program.
3)
Must have minimum Reading (79) and Writing (62) COMPASS scores and these scores cannot be
more than five (5) years old in the semester you compete.
4)
A cumulative GPA of 2.5 in designated competitive admission courses is required to compete for
admission into the Associate Degree Nursing program.
5)
Overall cumulative GPA of 2.0 in designated general education courses is required to compete for
admission into the Associate Degree Nursing program.
6)
Submit packet containing the following:


Personal Data Form.

After completing the pre-NLN Exam, the minimum total overall score must be in the
75TH percentile (115) or above for the competitive admissions process.
7)
Provide current physical exam (medical form)/immunization record and current CPR card after
program acceptance.
8)
Entrance into any healthcare program is contingent upon completion of a Background Check/Drug
Screen from www.clinicalbackground.com which must be completed after being conditionally
accepted to the program.
Packets should be turned in to the information desk at the Hartline Building by October 1, for Spring semester
admission Packets can be turned in no sooner than two weeks prior to due date. All packets must be complete
prior to due date.
