210 STUDENT AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT SPECIALIST REPORTS TO: Superintendent or Designee PURPOSE/VISION: The Student and Community Support Specialist promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and addresses barriers to learning and achievement. The Student and Community Support Specialist significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment. Such an environment is achieved by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success along with the implementation of effective intervention and prevention strategies. The Student and Community Support Specialist serves as a catalyst in promoting student well-being and successful completion of school. DUTIES: The Student and Community Support Specialist's principle task is to empower students, families, and school personnel to access available opportunities and resources that develop each student's potential. Integrated into all major functions are home, school, community assimilation; diversity and cultural competence; dropout prevention; health/wellness; drug and alcohol prevention; graduation awareness; and adherence to federal and state statutes, professional development and practices. QUALIFICATIONS: A. B. C. D. E. F. G. Holds a Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred. Three years successful teaching and/or school experience is desirable. Demonstrated experience in the field of mental health is desirable. Demonstrates an ability to conceptualize and implement a systemwide plan to assist local school personnel in an awareness and implementation of the Developmental Assets and cultural proficiency. Demonstrates an understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success. Demonstrates an ability to conceptualize and implement a systemwide plan to assist students to overcome non-academic barriers to success. Demonstrates expertise and/or experience counseling students in the area of alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention. Support efforts to fully implement the Bexley Learning Standards and its Strategic Priorities by providing feedback during the curriculum development and implementation process. Review and use PPAAUS, 40 Developmental Assets, and other survey data to inform and modify building practices and related school climate programming. Establish professional staff, parent, and community development agenda around social, emotional, and multicultural best practices. Communicate and partner with school, district, and community committees including School Climate Committees and the Family and Civic Engagement Committee. Coordinate and connect buildings with the necessary resources to support curriculum in a caring school atmosphere where emotional security, safety needs, and positive relationships are fostered. Empower students to improve school climate by planning ways to eliminate prejudice, racism, hate crimes, bullying, harassment, and other forms of violence supported by the ANTI‐DISCRIMINATION, ANTI‐HARASSMENT AND ANTI‐BULLYING Policy. Work with staff to help all students connect with co-curricular, extracurricular and/or community involvement. Work with families to help establish positive relationships with the schools and to support/identify concerns. Communicate regularly with all stakeholders (e.g. monthly/quarterly newsletter) through the assistance of Public Information Coordinator. Report to Board of Education once a year. Connect the school community to local health, mental health, and substance-abuse treatment resources by referring students and families to treatment centers, hospitals, and mental health professionals. Establish programs, policies, and procedures for positive ways to resolve conflict and deal with bullying/harassment and other violent or offensive acts. Develop and modify the district-wide safe and drug free schools programs based upon information obtained from the District’s PPAAUS and 40 Developmental Assets survey data. Consult with stakeholders to facilitate an understanding of factors in the home, local education agency, and community that affect students' educational experiences and use the information to support the development of student engagement programming. Initiate and support activities and programs such as the Success for All Program and after school academic support programs to overcome institutional barriers and gaps in student services. Develop programs or systems of care that support and enhance the health and wellness, social and emotional well-being, and safety of students by involving individuals from Nutrition Committee, DARN, Bexley Library, Bexley Recreation, local Churches and Synagogues, PTO leadership, and the Bexley Police Department. Assist the school and community in planning programs that alleviate barriers that may interfere with the learning process and student success. Administer superintendent’s social emotional and multicultural grants. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee. CONDUCT: Each staff member shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District. Each staff member shall serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
