Graduate Student Mentor Position
Position Summary
Graduate Student Mentors are current UOIT masters’ and doctoral students in good academic
standing who serve as role models and provide guidance to incoming, first-year UOIT graduate
students. Graduate mentors will be responsible for supporting their mentees to ensure a
smooth transition to graduate life. Mentors will assist in championing the academic and
personal success of first-year graduate students in the mentorship program. Please note that
this is a volunteer position.
Note: The commitment for this volunteer position is from April 2015 to the end of April 2016.
Responsibilities
Mentors will:









Commit 2 hours per week for one-on-one or group mentoring sessions either face-toface or online (email, telephone, and/or Skype)
Facilitate group mentoring sessions with first-year graduate students with support from
the Student Development Specialist-Graduate and Mature Students
Provide mentees with accurate information about campus services and resources and
make referrals as needed
Plan and attend peer mentoring program activities scheduled for the academic year
Work both independently; and as part of a team with their fellow Peer Mentors
Maintain regular communication and attend monthly status meetings with Student
Development Specialist and other mentors
Inform Student Development Specialist of any issues or concerns related to the
mentorship program or mentor/mentee partnership
Participate in program assessment and provide suggestions/feedback for program
improvement
Commit to the position for the entirety of the contract (April 2015 to April 2016)
Qualifications and Experience





Must be a returning UOIT graduate student for the 2015-2016 academic year
Must have successfully completed at least two semesters of study at the graduate level
at UOIT
Preferred CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 3.0 or higher, with a minimum of
2.7 required
Knowledgeable about the UOIT graduate student experience
Strong communication and interpersonal skills


Sound knowledge of UOIT services and resources
Willingness to learn and use online discussion forums
Training


Mentors are required to attend training in Spring 2015
Mentors are required to attend other trainings or professional development sessions as
scheduled by the Student Development Specialist.
