Engage Activity: 1. Create a T-chart as a class using the topic: What do you like to eat and what should you eat? 2. Students may create the T-chart in their science notebooks. Building Background Describe how the teacher will capture students’ interest. What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement? EXPLORATION Exploration Activity 1. Create a few hypothetical meals together choosing items from the labels and menus. 2. Students identify carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and calories for each meal. Create a table to organize the data and make comparisons. Strategies Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing. List “big idea” conceptual questions the teacher will use to encourage and/or focus students’ exploration EXPLANATION 1. Determine which meal is the healthiest and why. 2. Ask and discuss: What resources did we use to access the nutritional content of our meal? How do companies communicate nutritional content of their products? (The Subway web site and the company’s campaign for eating healthier fast food is a good resource for the discussion.) How can the Internet be a useful resource in helping us make healthy decisions? Lesson Delivery Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by the teacher. What questions or techniques will the teacher use to help students connect their exploration to the concept under examination? List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations. ELABORATION Elaboration Activity: 1. Gather magazines/newspaper advertisements or online resources that relate to healthy or unhealthy behaviors. 2. How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives? EVALUATION 1. Students present brochures or public service announcements. 2. Students track their eating habits over time and report how they have improved their food choices since learning about nutrition and health. 3. Students write a reflection discussing what they have learned about nutrition and what they are still wondering. Assessment and Review How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective? This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson 3
