Dave Vanderwege - Heads up bicycle safety in Colorado Springs
CSCC is a member of the LAB; primary national organization for bicycling
It is the only formal curriculum for bicycling
In Colorado Springs 5 people are LAB certified; 4 of the 5 are members of CSCC
2014 Road 101 Course was offered.
Dave is taking the initiative to provide training; 101 Training UCCS end of May – reserved for students at
UCCS.
KoB submitted grants for two schools. They received funding. They want to offer the 101 Course to staff
and parents of the schools. There may be 3 to 5 spots opened to the bike club.
Being a LAB member, the club should sponsor several trainings.
They are planning to offer two courses; 101 is a comprehensive course of 9 hours. The model is one
evening and a full Saturday.
There is a new course – Safe Cycling 123 on Saturday, May 2. It contains basic skills and is a shorter
course for 3 hours.
Start & stop smoothly
Shift gears properly
How to ride in a straight line, close to curbs and structures
Look ahead in anticipation
Scanning both left, right and behind
Learn and use appropriate hand signals with both hands.
Course has application for these items properly.
The course would be open to Club members. We could use course as a membership development
opportunity. Experienced riders can learn/teach these basics to others.
Road 101 is a 9-hour course. Should we offer this course in the summer or fall? Summer is the
preferred timeframe.
Could we share sponsorship with a local bike club? Yes, good idea!
We could also sponsor multiple courses during a year.
Janine took the 2014 Road 101 Course and learned a lot about riding, riding safely and bicycle
components. She recommends everyone in the bike club to take the course.
People commented about the availability of mountain bike rides. Jean said that a source is available; just
contact Jean Zeh.
