VISITING RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN THE CENTRE FOR LIFE HISTORY AND LIFE WRITING RESEARCH What are Visiting Research Fellowships? We encourage ‘Visiting’ appointments by researchers and scholars who will contribute to the intellectual life of the Centre. Normally, ‘Visiting’ status is offered to members of faculty at another institution, either at the UK or abroad, those working in the public or private sectors, and/or self-employed research consultants. The purpose of conferring a Visiting appointment is to provide an opportunity for researchers outside Sussex to collaborate with Sussex faculty on a research project or initiative, normally through spending a period of time in residence at the University. Who can propose Visiting Fellows? Anyone can apply. However before completing an application, you should familiarise yourself with the work of the centre. Our website provides details at: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/clhlwr/ You might also make direct contact with a member of faculty with whom you hope to collaborate during the fellowship. Decisions on appointment will be based on the following criteria: The quality of the proposed project or activity The fit between the applicants' interests, and those of CLHLWR The appropriateness of the proposed outputs Visiting Fellows may be sponsored by a member of faculty in CLHLWR, who should agree to act as their mentor for the period of their visit. Finance/Funding If visitors are to use university facilities then a bench fee of £1000 per term or £350 per month is applied, to cover costs of administration, office space, access to telephone, fax, computing, library and sporting facilities. Appointments can be made for periods of 1 month to 3 years, and must be approved by the Centre Directors and the Head of the Centre for Community Engagement where the CLHLWR is located. CLHLWR has no funds to help support a Visiting Fellow. Applications can only be considered from those who already have (or expect to have) adequate financial support. Accommodation It is sometimes possible to book accommodation on campus. The University Housing Office has also negotiated a discount at selected hotels in the local area. In all cases of visiting scholars, the request for attachment must be made in writing to the Centre Directors along with the form Centre for Life History and Life Writing Research – Visiting Scholar Application 2009/10 (available on CLHLWR website and in hard copy from Director of Research). The request must be approved by the CLHLWR Directors and Head of Department at the Centre for Community Engagement where CLHLWR is based. These are non-salaried fixed-term appointments. The four categories of visiting scholar are: 1. Visitor by invitation 2. Visitor/student without privileges 3. Visitor with privileges 4. Student with privileges 5. Honorary and emeritus appointments 1. Visitor by Invitation Staff in the Centre may wish to have distinguished academic/ creative arts practitioners attached to Centre for a period of time. The Centre will provide access to library and computer facilities and normally provide at least shared office accommodation for the duration of the stay without charge. In return the visitor will be expected to become fully involved in the life of the Centre and provide some teaching, guest lectures or masterclasses while at the University. The Centre should seek external funding to support such visitors: e.g. Leverhulme Visiting Professorships or Leverhulme Visiting Fellowships, Royal Literary Fund Fellowships, British Council bursaries, Fulbright Scholarships or Guggenheim awards, etc. 2. Visitors/students without privileges Frequently former students or those with Sussex connections but employed at institutions abroad need a letter from a UK institution offering them a nominal attachment to secure travel or other research money. Although they may wish to visit the University they are usually seeking to use research libraries elsewhere. The Centre can provide such invitations without charge provided we are satisfied with the academic project that is being pursued in the UK. Such visitors are not entitled to use Centre facilities though they may wish to attend special lectures occasionally. 3. Visitor with privileges This is someone visiting the UK who wishes to become formally attached to the Centre. They will be given use of the library and computing facilities, invited to take part in special seminars or lectures, and included in most of our communal academic activities. Where no office accommodation is required we will charge a set bench fee to be calculated annually on the basis of costs agreed by the Head of Department, the Senior Operational Manager, and Director of Research. If office and computer facilities are required this fee will be higher, reflecting the cost to the School of this space. The fee in 2009/10 for visitors, to include use of an office, PC, library and postal facilities is £1000 per term or £350 per month. 4. Student with Privileges This is a doctoral student who wishes to become attached to the Centre for a period to pursue their research. Privileges are as for the visitor (3) above, though no office accommodation will be offered other than the use of shared graduate facilities. The Centre will charge the student a fee that is ½ the full-time postgraduate fee (either Home/EU or overseas) they would pay if formally enrolled at Sussex. This will be calculated on a monthly/termly/annual basis as appropriate. Such arrangements should never exceed an academic year. This would be without a dedicated office but the candidate would be entitled to the shared postgraduate space and library facilities. This fee does not include living accommodation. 5. Honorary and emeritus appointments? It is also possible to request appointments to Honorary positions (e.g. Honorary Professor, Honorary Research Fellow, etc.) and Emeritus positions (e.g. Emeritus Professor) to those contributing to teaching and/or research in the School on an agreed and regular basis, and/or contributing advice or support, and whose contribution would be facilitated by the granting of this status. Appointments to Honorary status are particularly appropriate for senior figures in the public or private sector with whom the School has, or wishes to develop strong research links. Honorary and Emeritus positions do not normally involve payment of a fee; Honorary positions are not normally expected to involve the provision of University facilities, and must be approved by the Academic Promotions and Advancements Committee.
