Speaker’s Biographies
Stephen Haddrill, Chief Executive Officer, Financial Reporting Council
Stephen Haddrill became Chief Executive Officer of the Financial
Reporting Council in November 2009. Previously he was Director General
of the ABI from May 2005. In December 2008, Stephen was appointed as
a member of the Financial Crisis Advisory Group (FCAG), the high-level
advisory group set up by the International Accounting Standards Board
and the Financial Accounting Standards Board to consider financial
reporting issues arising from the global financial crisis. In October 2007,
Stephen was appointed Vice President and Chair of the Board of the
Institute for Employment Studies, the UK's leading employment and
human resources experts.
Stephen was Director General, Fair Markets Group at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI),
where he was responsible for the development of the framework within which business operates,
including the competition and consumer framework, employment relations, company law, women
and equality issues, and also trade and European issues. He held this position from January 2002.
Prior to this, from 1998 until Spring 2002, he held other positions within the DTI, including Director of
Employment Relations, and Consumer Affairs. From 1994 to 1998 he was a director of the DTI’s
Competitiveness Unit, a central policy team reporting directly to the Secretary of State.
From 1990 to 1994 he left the UK civil service to work for the Hong Kong Government as a member of
the Governor’s Central Policy Unit.
Stephen studied history and economics at Oxford University and joined the Department of Energy in
1978 where he held a number of posts, principally on nuclear issues and as Principal Private Secretary
to the Secretary of State for Energy.
Peter Montagnon, Senior Investment Adviser, Financial Reporting Council
Peter Montagnon joined the Financial Reporting Council as Senior
Investment Adviser in May 2010, after almost ten years as Director
of Investment Affairs of the Association of British Insurers.
Previously Mr Montagnon was a senior journalist on the Financial
Times, including spells as Head of the Lex Column and in charge of
coverage of the international capital markets.
Mr Montagnon was a member of the European Commission’s
Corporate Governance Forum from 2005 to 2011. He is past
Chairman of the Board of the International Corporate Governance
Network and is also a visiting Professor in Corporate Governance at
the Cass Business School of the City University, London.
Michelle Edkins, Managing Director, Head of Corporate Governance - Europe,
BlackRock
Michelle Edkins is a Managing Director and Head of Corporate Governance in
Europe for BlackRock. BlackRock is the world’s largest asset manager with
over $3 trillion in assets under management. Michelle is responsible for the
engagement and proxy voting activities in relation to the European
companies in which BlackRock invests on behalf of clients. She is an active
participant in the public corporate governance debate and regularly speaks
and writes on the importance of good stewardship for company
performance. She is a member of the Board of Governors of the ICGN and of
the Investment Committees of the Association of British Insurers and of
Eumedion in the Netherlands.
Prior to joining BlackRock, Michelle was for four years Managing Director at Governance for Owners,
an independent partnership offering products that support responsible long-term share ownership.
Prior to joining GO, Michelle spent over eight years at Hermes Pensions Management, initially as the
head of the corporate governance team and thereafter as Director of Institutional Relations. An
economist by training, Michelle previously worked for New Zealand’s central bank and the British
High Commission in Wellington.
Colin Ellis, Chief Economist and Head of Research, BVCA
Colin Ellis is the Chief Economist and Head of Research at the BVCA, providing
commentary and briefing on the economic environment for members and
their portfolio companies. He also oversees the strategic direction of the
BVCA's Research function, including analysis of trends and issues affecting the
venture capital and private equity industry. Colin is also involved in building
and maintaining relationships with government, investors, academia and the
general public. Before joining the BVCA, Colin was the European Economist at
Daiwa Capital Markets, and was previously a senior economist and manager at
the Bank of England, where his roles included writing the Inflation Report,
managing the Quarterly Bulletin, and coordinating the Bank's regional offices.
Colin has published a number of research papers and articles, covering investment, pricing, real-time
data and monetary policy among other topics. He frequently speaks at a wide range of conferences
and seminars, and is a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.
Gavin Grant, Head of Core Corporate Governance Owenership Strategies Research, Norges
Bank Investment Management (NBIM)
Gavin Grant is Head of Core Corporate Governance Ownership Strategies Research at Norges Bank
Investment Management (NBIM). NBIM is a separate part of the Norwegian central bank and is
responsible for investing the international assets of the Norwegian Government Pension Fund.
The Ownership Strategies group’s main objective is to actively exercise ownership rights and promote
good corporate governance in order to protect the financial assets under management
Prior to joining NBIM Gavin Grant spent six years as Head of Corporate Governance Analysis for
Deutsche Bank. The primary focus of his analysis was the link between standards of corporate
governance, performance and equity valuation. Gavin began his career as a portfolio manager and
spent eleven years specializing in emerging markets. He has a Masters degree in Investment Analysis
from Stirling University and a BSC honors degree from Dundee University.
Ida Levine, Senior Counsel and Senior Vice-President, Director of Capital International
Limited
Ida Levine is Senior Counsel and Senior Vice-President, and a Director
of Capital International Limited (“CIL”). CIL is the FSA regulated
subsidiary of The Capital Group Companies, Inc., one of the oldest
and largest global fund management groups. Ms. Levine manages the
Legal and Compliance function for CIL. She also oversees the
Responsible Investment/Corporate Governance function for Capital’s
institutional business in Europe, and recently has taken on a
regulatory affairs role.
Ms. Levine is a Director of Capital
International Emerging Markets Fund, one of the largest Luxembourg
EM funds. She has also acted as deal counsel for the Capital
International Emerging Market Private Equity funds.
Ms. Levine chairs CIL’s Audit Committee, and sits on Capital’s global Audit Committee. She is also is a
member of the Equity Investment Policy Group and Risk Oversight Committee for the Capital
institutional business.
Prior to joining Capital International Limited in 1998, Ida was a Partner in the London Office of Jones,
Day, Reavis & Pogue and Vice President and European Legal Officer with JP Morgan Investment
Management Inc. in London. Ms. Levine has practiced in the general corporate, mergers and
acquisitions, private equity, securities law and financial services areas. She served as Law Clerk to the
Honorable A. Wallace Tashima, then United States District Court for the Central District of California
(1980-81), and as Extern Clerk for the Honorable Walter R. Mansfield, United States Court of Appeals
for the Second Circuit (1977).
Ms. Levine is on the Board of Trustees of the Microloan Foundation, a micro-finance charity operating
in sub-Saharan Africa. She is also co-chair of the International Securities Regulation Committee of the
International Law Association and has delivered papers at their last four bi-annual meetings
(Berlin/Toronto/Rio de Janeiro/The Hague).
Dr Daniel Summerfield, Co-Head of Responsible Investment, USS
Daniel co-heads the Responsible Investment Team of the Universities
Superannuation Scheme (USS), one of the UK's largest pension funds. He is
responsible for leading USS’s work to improve corporate governance
performance of companies, hedge funds and markets in which USS invests
through the development and implementation of its engagement policy in
the UK and overseas.
Daniel serves as a member of a number of committees in the UK and
overseas including the NAPF’s Shareholder Affairs Committee. He is also a
founding member of the International Roundtable on Executive
Remuneration and Director Engagement.
Previously, he was the head of corporate governance at the Institute of Directors where he was
responsible for the IoD’s work on corporate governance.
Daniel also currently serves as a trustee and vice–chair of governors of a local school and is an
Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Cass Business School of the City University London. In 2008, he was
presented with an award in Corporate Governance by the Yale School of Management’s Millstein
Center for Corporate Governance.
Robert di Pietra, Professor in Accounting and Business Administration, Department of
Business and Social Studies, University of Siena, Italy
Roberto Di Pietra is a full professor in Accounting and Business
Administration at the Department of Business and Social Studies,
University of Siena, Italy, He received a Ph.D. in Accounting and
Business Administration from the University of Pisa in 1997; he has
also received a specialization in Banking in 1993. Di Pietra’s main
research interests are in International Accounting (IFRS and Financial
statements, IFRS and Corporate Governance, Accounting regulation,
IAS and organizational learning), in Auditing and in Accounting
History. He is also EB member of Accounting in Europe, Financial
Reporting and Revista Espanola de Contabilidad y Financiaccion de
Empresa.
Igor Filatotchev, Professor of Corporate Governance and Strategy, Cass Business School,
City University, London
Before coming to Cass in 2007 Igor Filatotchev held various academic
positions at Nottingham University Business School, Bradford University
School of Management, King’s College and Birkbeck College (University of
London). He earned his PhD in Economics from the Institute of World
Economy and International Relations (Moscow, the Russian Federation). His
research interests are focused on a fast growing area in the management and
economics literature relating to corporate governance effects on
entrepreneurship development, strategic decisions and organisational change.
Key research programmes currently in progress include analysis of resource and strategy roles of
corporate governance; corporate governance life-cycle; and a knowledge-based view on governance
development in entrepreneurial firms and IPOs. These projects were supported by research grants
from various national and international donors, including Economic and Social Research Council, the
UK Department of Trade and Industry, Leverhulme Trust, Institute of Chartered Accountants of
England and Wales and the European Commission. He has published extensively in the fields of
corporate governance and strategy in leading academic journals such as Academy of Management
Journal, Academy of Management Perspectives, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science,
Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, California Management Review,
Journal of Management Studies and Journal of Business Venturing.
Ettore Croci, Assistant Professor in Corporate Finance, University of Milan, Italy
Ettore Croci is an Assistant Professor in Corporate Finance at the
University of Milan- Bicocca, where he currently teaches corporate
finance at both undergraduate and graduate level.
His current research interest is in the area of empirical corporate
finance, in particular M&A, corporate governance, and shareholder
activism. He has published various articles in Italian and
international scholarly journals (European Financial Management
Journal, Journal of Banking and Finance, International Review of
Financial Analysis, European Journal of Finance). He regularly acts as
a referee for several journals.
He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Lugano.
Giovanni Petrella, Associate Professor of Banking, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore,
Milan, Italy
Giovanni Petrella is an Associate Professor of Banking at the
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milano, where he currently
teaches derivatives and market microstructure. In Spring 2009 and
Spring 2010 we was William R. Hough Visiting Professor of Finance
at the University of Florida.
He is currently serving as the Director of the graduate program in
Banking and Finance as well as a member of the Doctorate School in
Economics and Management at the Università Cattolica del Sacro
Cuore.
His current research interests are in the areas of market
microstructure, derivatives and portfolio management.
He has published three books and various articles in Italian and international (European Financial
Management Journal, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Futures Markets, Journal of Trading,
Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance) scholarly journals. He regularly acts as a referee for
several journals.
He holds a Ph.D. in Financial Markets from Catholic University and an M.A. in Economics from Bocconi
University.
Maureen Muller-Kahle, Assistant Professor of Management, Pennsylvania State
University, US
Maureen Muller-Kahle is an Assistant Professor of Management at
the Pennsylvania State University. She received her PhD in
Strategy Management from Old Dominion University, USA and her
MBA and BA from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, USA.
Her work in corporate governance has been published in
Corporate Governance, an International Review. She also worked
in the media industry for over a decade holding sales and
marketing positions at USA TODAY, a Gannett, Inc. newspaper and
at The Washington Post. When she’s not working, she enjoys
running, biking, sailing and rowing.
Rosario Faraci, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Business Economics and
Management of the University of Catania (Italy)
Rosario Faraci, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of
Business Economics and Management of the University
of Catania (Italy), where he served as Deputy Chair and
also held an appointment as President of the
Undergraduate Program in Business Administration. He
has been Visiting Professor at the University of Florida
(1999-2010) and Visiting Research Scholar at the Texas
A&M University (1996-1997). He has been Director of
the Master Program in e-Business at the University of
Catania.
He served as a member of the Research Committee at the Academy of Management, BPS Division. In
2007 he was co-organizer of the SMS Special Conference “New Frontiers in Entrepreneurship:
Strategy, Governance, and Evolution”. In 2008 he has been one of the Co-organizers of the
international symposium "Private Equity and Entrepreneurship". In 2010 he has co-organized the XXX
Annual International Conference of the Strategic Management Society in Rome. His research interests
are in the areas of strategic management, corporate governance, entrepreneurship and family
business, privatization of state-owned firms. He has authored/edited six books and numerous articles
in leading journals. He serves as Co-Editor of the Journal of Management and Governance.
